Wool undergarments
« on: June 25, 2010, 05:15:00 PM »
I plan on buying some wool clothing before hunting season gets here. I've had some old wool pants forever and love em. I've looked at the undergarmentd on 3rivers, but that's about it.
Any suggestions?

LL Bean, Filson. For the price though, cant beat the Beans or the lifetime warranty.

Ibex    http://www.ibexwear.com/
or Smartwool. The smaller the Merino wool fiber, the more comfortable next to the sking. Ibex has sales and closeouts quite often. That's when I can afford it. Filson uses larger wool fibers and is not quite as next to skin friendly.

Ulfrotte' or I believe it is called Wool Power now is great stuff.  I have never stayed so warm on stand since I started putting this stuff under a good wool outer garment.  I have hunted open treestands in -30 with it here in Michigan during out late season.

I've worn wool since the itchy, scratchy stuff of the 60's.  The best is 100% Merino wool.  It's soft like cotton but it's like having a hand warmer for your body.  I've had the Filson, Ice Breaker and now Minus33.  The Filson and Ice Breaker only come in wts up to about 200-260 while the Minus33 comes in at 400.  The Filson got ratty within acouple of years and ultimately disintegrated.  The Ice Breaker is still going strong after about 4 years and is a quality piece.  I just got the Minus33 440g tops and bottoms and have only worn them for one week.  They and Ulfrotte are the only companies that I have found that offer 400g and Minus33 is half the cost of Ulfrotte.

My recomendation after trying all three is Minus33 -  http://www.minus33.com/merino-wool-baselayer-index.html  It's still 100% Merino Wool but is assembled in China.  Ice Breaker is a New Zealand company and Ulfrotte is Swedish I believe.  There is very little Merino wool grown in the USA.

Dave, it was good to finally meet you in person at Compton. It does not get -30 here in TN, however Dave is right...... Ullfrotte' all the way for us ! We hunted three days in a row here and it was 5-9 degrees in the morning. We wore 400 gr Ullfrotte' for a base layer, then one 100 % merino wool Goodwill sweater, then Predator 380gr fall gray fleece over that top and bottom. Predator fleece beenie hat, chemical handwarmers, and Lacrosse Alpha Lite 7MM neoprene boots. We stayed on stand for 4 hrs and were comfy.

We used to wear military surplus polypro cause the factory was 30 miles from our house. We could get a top and bottom for $20. Yes, it was pretty good stuff but once you get it sweated up you cannot hardly get the scent out of it. It also has a narrow comfort range. Pretty good walking slowly to your stand in the morning, not good coming out at noon and 50 degrees !

One of the best features of wool is the large comfort range. I did the sniff test in the pit area of the top after 2-3 hunts and no odor ! My only regret is not buying Ullfrotte' sooner ! Yes a top and bottom is $150 but given proper care it will last a lifetime. Best $$$ I ever spent.... JMHO

Ullfrotte' Merino wool is the best thermal underwear I have ever used.  I have the Cabelas china made merino wool top/bottoms supposedly at an even heavier weight than my Ullfrotte' but still doesn't have the comfort and warmth of Ullfrotte'.  Definately worth the extra money.

I found good prices on Merino wool long johns at Campmor.com. One style is lined with silk, too. I bought two light sets for layering when the extra warmth is needed.

Each Ullfrotte' garment has the seamstress's name sewn into it..... nuff said about quality right there. I almost did what 686Kevin did and bought the Cabelas supposed equals to Ullfrotte'. I really like Cabelas, great company and just about everything I ever bought from them I was more than happy with. However, on the subject at hand here it is obvious that Ullfrotte' has no equal. Again my only regret is I did not get my Ullfrotte' sooner. JMHO
