String measurements?

What are the different diameters of strings? Starting with 12 strand and going up to 16 strand. I know you can serve the string differently. But I am just wanting an average diameter with a one wrap serving...kind of standard.

Well on D97 12 strands is about .080 diameter and with a serving of .024 Halo gives it about .108 diameter.Which it gives me a good nock fit with Easton 3D Super nocks and large groove G-nocks .098 throat.I get a light snap but not to tight. With 8 strands D97 and 6 strands 450+ is about .060-.065 diameter,I double serve these with 3D .017 and then with .021 62XS for close to the same nock fit. With 12 strand D97 I've shot on bows up to 83#@28,12 strand D97 is strong enough for up to a 100# bow.

Is there a certain amount that you can factor in when going up to 14 and 16 strand? The reason I ask is I have fallen in love with Mercury nocks. I bought some 5/16" and some 11/32". But I noticed the throat of the 11/32" is considerably wider than the 5/16". I didn't think it would be that much. So now I am thinking about trying to heat them up with hot water or something to get them to compress a little. I put them on a D97 12 strand they are so wide they won't even hold to the string. The 5/16" are perfect. I might just cut them off and glue the 5/16" on...?

I'm not sure I haven't made any strings larger then 12 strand D97.I loved mercury nocks on my wood arrows but lately haven't shot my woods much.Been shooting carbons mostly.Yes I know 11/32 mercury is wider then the 5/16".That was back when you could choose dacron or FF,alot of newer string materials these days.I might try 14 strands of D97 and maybe No.62 .025 serving for the 11/32 mercury nocks. That might be a good fit and it still may work for 5/16 mercury's too.Or you might try laying a couple of extra strands under the serving with the 12 strand string.

It's an easy fix--a trick Rod Jenkins uses and told me about.
Just put a few wraps of dental floss at the nock point. Get the fit you want, tie it off, and apply a drop of super glue. It should last as long as the string, but isn't hard to remove if you want it off.

I do like chad suggest when useing wood arrows on strings I have built for other nocks. No reason to double serve that way. Most times I just use b-50 string instead of floss however because I have a bunch left over after switching to d-97.

I agree Chad, that is the way I would do it. I will be making some arrows up for someone and just wanted to see if I could make these 11/32" work with his string or if I'd have to go to the 5/16". Thanks, David
