Stu's DSC (Read Only) & Open Office Problem Using Windows 7

I never had a problem with Stu's DSC program using Windows XP with Open Office. Clicked on Stu's DSC progam, a box popped up asking me to open with Open Office. Clicked on that and Stu's DSC progam opened up and I could plug in my info.

But, since my new computer is running Windows 7, I'm having trouble with Stu's DSC program. I download Stu's DSC program, the box pops up and I click on "open" with Open Office. Stu's DSC program appears, but and here's the rub, it's in "read only" format.  :(  Does anyone know why it's in read only format?  :confused:  Also, does anyone have a clue on how I can get around this read only format so I can plug in my data? When I click on "HELP", it says the file is encrypted or it needs a password. I never saw a place for a password. Right now, Windows 7 has got me frustrated.      :mad:     Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The read only format just means that you cannot change his code. The underlying calculations that are embedded...Van

Can I plug in my data in the boxes if I click on "save" the file? Right now, I can't use Stu's progam anymore.

I think you have to open the file in Excel...Van

Stu's website says I can use Open Office to open the file.

That is kind of weird. You could just try setting it for backwards compatibility with xp and see if it works. It should work though. i run it in open office in xp with no problem. i haven't bothered with windows 7 yet so i don't know what might be causing the issue.

You can right-click on Stu's file and click on "properties" at the bottom of the drop down menu. When the "properties" box opens look at the bottom where it says "Attributes" if the Read-only box has a check or is filled click on it so that the box is empty. This should make it editable. My wife's computer has Win 7 but I haven't had to change the attributes on files in it yet but I assume it should be the same as xp. By the way I like win 7 from what I've seen so far.

Do I have to save the file first because right now, when I open it, it opens in a read only format. I haven't saved the file. I never had to with XP.

Where is the file located? I assume on your computer and you need to do what I recommended before opening the file in OpenOffice.

Open Office opens the file, but it opens it in read only format. I can't plug in my data. It won't allow me to.

You have to change the file to readable before opening it. Have you done that?

Why don't you save the file? Then set the attributes so that it is no longer read only. Seems simple enough. I don't know what "Stu's DSC" is.

I found it. It was checked to "read only". I unchecked it, clicked on "apply", clicked on "ok" and then went back to the DSC and it's still "read only".

I'm getting an intense dislike to Windows 7.

Whatever is marking it read only is likely the culprit. When you create a file in windows 7 it doesn't default to read only. Therefore I would suspect the source of the problem to come from either open office or "Stu's DSC".

At any rate if it is marked so that it is editable (not read only) then close the file and re-open it.

It works fine on my Lap top with Windows 7.  I'm using Stu's version 3-15-10...Van

For me, Stu's program is a godsend. I would hate to go back to the old "bareshaft" method of arrow tuning. Stu's program gives me a tunable arrow in a few minutes. For the fine tune, all I have to do is adjust the brace height either up or down.
