Problem with loub Longbow - How can i get him quiet ?
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:50:00 AM »
Hello,

i love shooting my Bob Lee Signature Take Down, and i am by far better with it than with my Recurve. But though i tried everything it still is kind of loud.

It is a 56@my29 inch bow 60" long.
My arrows have about 630 grain, CX Heritages with 225 front loading.

I tried all brace heights from 7 to 9 1\\2 to find the sweet spot but it was not very obvious and not quieter but the vibration were far less.

Than i tried beaver puff silencers in different positions , also 4 silencers, and i tried wool on the string ends where it might hit the bow....

I just down seem to find the right quiet spot or do i simplz not notice it?

Any help apreciated, thanks
Kind regards
Axel

What type of string on that bow?  I would change the string personally.  If it can handle fast flight, I'd look and a low strand count 450+.

Are you sure your arrows aren't hitting the riser?

oh and if you are drawing a true 29" with a 60" bow that might be too short maybe try some 62 to 64" limbs!

Its a dacron string, will changing to fast flight affect the arrows, making it necessary to change arrows?
I still hope to find a way of keeping the string a out of 2 reasons, i can shoot the same arrows out of my recurve and i dont have the money to buy a new set of arrows at the moment.

If you are using dacron and still have a loud bow, I suspect your arrows are hitting the rest or the bow is too short for your draw. Going to dynaflight, ff, 450+ etc will most likely worsen the situation...but it is worth trying. If it is your arrows (or vibration) creating the noise they may help solve the issue.

The only other things I can think of are...1. are you sure you have your limb bolts down securely, and 2. are you sure the bow doesn't have anything wrong with it (cracks/delaminations?).
Until next time...good shooting,
Lee

the limb bolts are tight.

the bow has minor stresslines in the outer coating but nothing other.

Thanks so far.

Longbows are usually pretty quiet.  Some silly things that can affect sound are arrow weight, brace height, nock height, and arrow integrity (are the points and "stuff" tight and not making the noise you are hearing).

In addition, your release could also affect the early arrow flight and cause it to hit the riser or shelf.

You spoke of heavy enough arrows and of working with brace, how about the nock hieght?  Is the arrow hitting the bow ?

Dacron is not always a quieter string in my opinion, they can allow alot of vibration. When I have a bow that is louder then I want,I try a different string material.A FF type string will probably make your arrows weaker.I shoot a FF type string on all my bows that are made for it.The only bows I shoot dacron on are a couple of older recurves. Some of my bows like D97 and some like 450+ and some like 8125.I make my own strings so I can play around with different sring types to find out which ones work the best for a particular bow.

My bob Lee takedown is super quiet with either recurve or long bow limbs on it.

When I first got it I went nuts over how loud it was. I spent alot of time working to find what it liked that would be quiet as well!

I have 60" recurve and longbow limbs that both like the brace height at 8 1/8" with a skinny astro flight string and bow hush (for the recurve limbs only) and hush puppies (for both)it's right there with the quietest bow I have ever shot. The string by far made the biggest difference in noise.

I had good results with a thin fast flight string as well but the astro flight was even quieter.

I had a similar problem with my Navajo bow.  I finally figured out that 1: my release was a big part of the problem and 2: that my arrows were too stiff and striking the bow on the way past.

I shoot 3 under and was plucking basically.

Whump Sez;  I read in your post that you have 225 up front. There has been a lot of discussion over time about weight up front for penetration and it will work as long as your arrow spine will handle it. You could be getting on the edge of your spine range with that much weight up front and your longer draw and arrow length is adding to a limber arrow. I shot 5575 gold tips last year with the same weight forward out of a 54lb long bow at 28" draw with 30" arrow,5" fletch, standard measurement. I was getting good penetration at 20 yds but it dropped considerable at 10 yds. Of the 3 deer I shot and recovered last season I only got pass through penetration on the longest shot. The two 10yd shots only got about 12" of penetration. I tested on foam this summer and achieved better penetration with weight tubes and dropping my point weight to 160gns. I could shoot the target at 5 & 10yds and I had nock left and right arrows sticking in the target with considerable drop in penetration. By increasing my arrow weight with the tubes and dropping my point weight I stopped the excessive paradox up close eliminating the nock left and right problem. This is a long story but you could be having the same problem and some of the noise you are hearing is arrow slap.  I would also give considerable thought to what "adeeden" sez since he has solved his noise problem with string material. You can probably get by with the arrows you have by dropping point weight or building your arrow rest out some if you begin to experience a limber arrow after going to a fast flight or astro flight string.  Hunt safe.

Loose points can make noise. I think the heavy ones make more noise.

Axel:

The first thing I would do is try a heavier arrow (just to see what happens).

Make sure the nocks on your arrows are fitting onto the string tightly. If they're loose, the bow will be noisy.

I would definitely ditch the old Dacron for a new one. Dacron has a bad tendency to stretch in the worst possible places over a period of time.

If these steps don't work, let me know.

Thanks alot so far.

The CX are 350s in 31,25" with 4" fletch, 125gr. point and 100gr. GT insert weights. It is definately not the arrow hitting the riser, its a vibrating noise, i had some help and figured this out yesterday.

Ive already built the riser out to a bit over 1/8" to make the arrows fit.

I think i have no chance other than trying a fast flight and hoping to be able to adjust the arrows.

The nocks are not very tight on the string, this i will try before.

I do believe your arrows are to stiff.  Looks to me like you need at least another 50 grs up front
