Bear season 2010
« on: July 20, 2010, 02:01:00 AM »
Well laid up here on the couch so figured I got time to post a couple hunts on here.

I finally decided to put in the time and kill a black bear with my long bow. Was a great hunt. I spent many days in the stand with no luck. The season actually started off really slow and we started thinking it wasn't going to happen.

Then the fires came a my friends stand that was 8 miles or so down the road was lost to the fire. Much of the forest in the area was burned down. One day we were gonna hunt the stand and when we showed up it seemed as the whole world was on fire.
As we stood by the trucks on the road the ash was falling onto them and the fire was close enough that it sounded like a raging waterfall.
We contemplated hunting but common sense sent us home. I felt terrible for my friend as this was the first night that he made it out to hunt and his stand was gone!

Well I went out another day. I was going to meet my friend Dave and his wife Candy up at the stand. They were going to be late so I told em to just come down to the stand as I was going to go in when I got there.
I waited and waited but they didn't show. After a while I heard something. Thinking it was them I looked up the hill and coming through the woods was a bear. I stood and managed to turn on the video camera as he showed up. He actually layed down facing me and made a mess out of my sled and what not for 25 minutes.
I really like the dark muzzle that he has. At some point I remember thinking I was glad Dave and Candy were late as I am sure I would have let Candy take him. Neither of them had ever shot a bear.
Well he finally stood and stepped to his left. Once the boiler room opened up the draw and release was instictual. My 250grn three blade carbon arrow zipped through him like butter. He jumped straight up, hit the ground and looked around, confused.
Then he bolted about thirty yards and dropped. I couldn't see him because the area I hunt is terribly thick, but I heard his death moan.
Cool part is I got it all on video.
After I climbed down and found em and drug him to the stand Dave and Candy showed up!
Was a great hunt. Very exciting.
Heres a couple pics.
I will write about Dave and I's grizzly bear hunt later.
thanks for reading
Jason
