FF string and arrow question
« on: July 20, 2010, 03:54:00 AM »
Hello again,

because of sound matters i will upgrade my Bob Lee Signature LB to a Fast Flight string.

The guy at the shop told me @54lbs (a bit more at my 30" draw) he´d recommend a 18 strand string (Fast  Flite+); I wonder isnt that a bit much, i mean Stus calculator doesnt even have an option for it...

And second what you think, will my arrows still be shootable with the change of string?

Bow: 60" 54#@28", i draw 29-30"

CX HEritage 350 31,25"; 225gr. front 3x 4"fletch;

Thanks for youre help again, i wonder where i would be without all youre wisdom...somewhere near stone-age im sure!

I'd order an 8 strand (D10) from SBD Strings. You could go up to 10 if it made you feel better, but 8 should be heavy enough. You should gain both speed and be quieter.
I have a couple 0f 6 strand and they are supposed to be good up to around 54

You probably will need to go up in stiffness and lower your brace height a bit with a skinny string.

Each strand has a tensile strength of 50 lbs I believe.

So if I do the math....you could pull a 900 pound bow with 18 strand...oh wait...no one could do that! :readit:  Go with an 8 strand. That still gives you 340lbs for margin of error.

It could also change your arrow set-up, but you might only have to play with weight up front. Shoot 'em and see.

Just my 2 cents,

8 strand SBD is the way to go.

Going to a thinner low stretch string makes no difference in the arrows I need to shoot compared to my dacron strings. It isn't that radical a difference.

Saumensch, nothing wrong with an 18 strand f.f.!

I shot one for years on my signature T.D. I have since been shooting 10 strand 450+. I have shot smaller strand strings wasn't for me!

Folks have been shootin, 15,18 and 20 strand F.F. strings on these bows for years, before other material were developed!

Lot of animals taken also. Try both, and see what works. It's part of the process and fun.

My only experience with FF was on a 60# LaClair Grayling Spirit.  That string was really noisy. It was a 20 strand. I had Frank Bullitt build me a 12 Strand D97 string and that bow came alive.  Fast and quite.

Personally, I'd go to another string material: D97, 450+, there are tooo many to list.

I would have a few questions as to why anyone is shooting 18 strand fast flight strings.  If you like them feel free to do so. I just don't understand why you would throw away all the advantages of the higher strength string by using so many strands. A lower stretch material allows a thinner string which will add speed to your arrows and can be quieter than the thicker strings.

18 strands is more than a bit much. My suggestion is use D10 or 8125, 8 strands (for your draw). You can lower your brace 1/2 ".
Your arrows will need to be stiffer for the new string.........lower point weight 25-50gn or shorten the arrows by 1 cm + for wood. You will need to retune a bit to be sure and you will love the improvements.
