First time Trad for Turkey.
« on: May 11, 2007, 04:52:00 PM »
I couldn't sleep since I was so excited. I headed out about
2:30 am. Crazy right? I get out to the property and gather my gear. Whent out to a place out in the wood where I could hang out a few hours to kill some time. Just before light, I began walking the log roads trying to locate some Turkey with an Owl call. I cover some serious acerage with out a sound of a Turkey. It is now pretty light out, but foggy. I head over to a place I often have seen Turkey and figure I just hang there and work it. Around 8 am I had 3 hens come around. One walk right up to me no more than 3-4 yards. It was a rush. No Toms today, but I sure had fun.  PS The bugs nearly made me insane!
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Getting out in the early AM s a reward often unappreciated. Glad you were able to enjoy the solitude.(well, except for the bugs LOL)

Jerry,

Buy a thermacell and leave the bugs behind, you'll still hear them buzzin' but no more bitin'.

It sure is fun just to get out on a spring morning with trad gear. I have been out every morning but one this month even if it for just an hour and a half, i love it.

This year was my first turkey hunt also.  I was up at 3:30AM everyday and loved every minute of it.  It is exciting to hear those longbeards gobble in the morning.  Just something incredible about heading to the woods with trad gear in hand before the sun is up.  Congrats on a great hunt.  You don't need to shoot one to have a good hunt.  Success is being out there and coming home safe.
