String breaking
« on: July 26, 2010, 12:05:00 PM »
Today on my third shot, I suffered a string failure.  This is the second time in less than 10 days.  Both times the lower loop broke and it appears that it broke in the area that it contacts the string nock.
I have inspected the nock and cannot see or feel any burrs, nicks or other imperfections.
I am going to take some ultra fine sandpaper and hit the area up just to make sure.
What else can I do???  I am toying with the idea of doing a double layer of serving on the loops or wrapping the loop with yarn to prevent wear.  Any other ideas would be welcomed.
Also...I am currently shooting a 14 strand endless bow string.  Should I be shooting more strands out of a 55# bear Super Kodiak?  My draw length is 30 inches so I figure I am shooting around 60#
Thanks
Jim

Is the bow new and if so return it.Are you making these strings?

Sounds like a sharp spot or burr.  I've seen bows that had them that were undetectable, other than they "ate" strings--both flemish and endless.

14 strands is fine for that bow.

if you are at all handy, just fix it yourself.  It appears that there is a sharp spot on that lower nock.  Remember to take into account that you are drawing 30" and bending that bow when you figure out likely spots for that sharp spot.

It may not even be a burr but rather a squared edge that acts like a cutting edge when under a ton of pressure.

Use some sand paper and spray the area with canned spray of some sort.

I had 3 strings that was damaged at the same way with a new bow recently.
What we found out was that the limb twisted at full-draw and the string-loop was cut when it slided downwards because of this.(I pull 30.5-31" and it broke every time I pulled thru)

Check your limb!! if it is a new bow send it back for repair. If it is an old one and you cant fix that yourself, check here on TG if someone can help you!

It might be dangerous if you have it at full-draw with a sharp broadhead on..!

What kind of string material FF or B50? Why are you shooting an endless instead of a Flemish twist. I haven't shot endless strings in a very long time. Even when I did shoot them(B50) they would break a strand or two but never on the ends. Sounds like a burr or something causing the problem.

I do spin my own strings using B50 as the Bear people do not recommend FF for this bow.  I have had the bow for a couple of years and just started having this problem.
Not shooting flemish as a personel preference and haven't learned to make them...yet.
Thanks to all for the advice.

That's odd.  First thing that comes to mind is check close for a delam in the groove.
