Fletching carbon arrows
« on: July 27, 2010, 12:24:00 AM »
Ok I seem to have a hard time fletching my carbon arrows. I have a jo jan fletcher with right helical clamps and straight clamps. I have right helical feathers and regular 5" shield feathers. How do you guys fletch your arrows what clamps do you guys use and what feathers should I use. Should I use the straight clamps? I'm confused and a little frustrated. What works best, I'm a right hand shooter. I should be using right helical fletching, correct??

babs,

Feathers are either right or left wing not helical. They have a natural curve or  lip on one side (depending on which side on the bird the feather came from). Your being righty or lefty does not matter. The only thing that matters is you use right wing feathers with your right wing clamp. I have never used a straight clamp but I would assume you could use either left or right wing.

Take a look at this link Ted from Raptor Archery expalins it.

What exactly are you having problems with?  Are you not able to get the feather to seat on the shaft?  With the jo jan you just need to throw the directions away.  From that point on just move the 2 resting points around till you get the arrow where you need it.  Chances are it will be the opposite of the directions...

I cant get them to seat properly. only about half the feather is touching the shaft and the other is sticking up off the shaft

I experienced the same thing with that fletcher.  Just keep moving the points around.  To fletch my MFX shafts with left wing I have to move both the nock rest and the v rest for the shaft all the way to the right, which seems totally backwards.  Just keep messing around and you will figure it out.

These are the carbons we sell, and they are done on a Jo-Jan.  As posted above, the Jo-Jan takes a little fiddling around but once properly adjusted it will crank out fine arrows.  Another nice feature of the Jo-Jan is they put a lot of helical on the fletch, which is a real plus for broadhead flight.

What Motorhead sez....been using Bitz for 40 yrs, puts a great helical on in either 3 or 4 Fletch on all arrow types.
