I'm flying to Dallas next friday, then going to the Killean are for the weekend. Is there any shoots going on or anywhere I could chase a hog for a day?

Thanks in advance. I'm going there to see my son before he shipps out for Iraq, but I'll have some time when he has to be at the base

Get a hold of Texaswoody. He might be able to help. Real great guy!  Thank your son for his service to our nation and prayers for a safe return.

At Fort Hood they have a sportsmans club where you sign up to hunt deer durning deer season. They probably have a range there and you can sign up to shoot on all of the thousand's of acres they have. It is next to all the tanks mantainace. Ken

Hi yes there are a few.

Lake Lavon WMA is about 30 mi NE of Dallas.  I believe they are still open year round for archery hog hunting.  Think its 6,500 acres.  Its army corp land and you need to stop by the office to get free hunting permit and parking permit.  Their program is not run by TWPD so you dont need a $48 APH.  For this place you need a hunters education card or some sort no matter how old you are.

Lake Jim Chapman aka "Cooper" WMA is about 90 mi East Northeast of Dallas.  I believe they are still open most of the year for archery hog (I think they are closed during a special whiteatail and shotgun/muzzle hunt seaons). Call them to find out.  Think (but not positive) its 15,000 acres total, 9,000 huntable.  Its army corp land but its run Texas Parks and Wildlife so you DO need the $48 APH.

wait, are you going to be in Dallas or Killeen?

If you are in Killen just go to Granger.  Its 10,000 acres total about 6,000 huntable broken into multiple hunting units surrounding the lake. Its open year round for hog archery hunting except for a handful of days in Sept/Oct when they do deer hunts.  Its also closed when they bring in the helos to shoot hogs in an effort to get the hog numbers down (usually Jan)

This place is army corp but its managed by Texas Parks and wildlife. You will need the $48 APH.

Also for the hunts mentioned above in addition to all the other stuff I mentioned you will need a 5 day nonresident special hunting LICENSE for an additional $48.

Also, dont kill any random critters (rattlesnakes, etc).  These places allow you to come hunt hogs b/c they want the hogs dead. Not b/c they want to give us a fun hunting venue.
