I tried Helmsman spar urethane for the first time on my last refinish job (1983 Kodiak I bought new). I was pleased with the results- looks like a new one!

I use a craft epoxy that I get from a local store. It is medium set 2500 lb. I have also use Ace and it worked really well. Sometimes I use smooth on if I have dark woods. It really deepens the look. I think a lot of guys don't use this type finish because it takes forever to sand ./ I spent the entire day sanding a bow today and putting one coat of epoxy on it and then sanding the epoxy. that was from 8 am this morning until 6 tonight. There is still a week left in finish work to do. Balance that out against sanding and completely finishing in one afternoon by spraying Crystal and there is a bunch of difference in work time./ It is nice though and anyone can do it if they want to take the time.

Lacquer is a tough finish and easy to apply, but is normally glossy.  If you want satin let it dry several days and then 0000 steel wool and maintain with some kind of wax polish.

Some finishes will turn milky if you use a polish on them too soon.
Blessed are the peacemakers
