Anyone using Zephyr broadheads?
« on: August 04, 2010, 03:22:00 PM »
Wondering how the quality of the stainless steel is in these heads? Does it sharpen well? Does it hold an edge passing through an animal? I'm considering the Scirocco.

This will be my first year to use Zepphyr broadheads.  I am using the Sasquatch.  Arrows are flying great.  Now it is up to me to make the shot.

I've killed at least 6 or 7 elk with Zephyrs.  Good broadheads, easy to sharpen as mentioned above.

Someone mentioned to me the new ones are no longer brazed, but are soldered (main blade to the ferrule). Because of this you need to be careful heating them up when installing on a converta point or on the arrow shaft. Anyone have any issues with that? I have a few of these heads but don't know if mine are the old brazed ones or the new soldered ones, anyway to tell?

Also I'm told the new heads are no longer soldered the entire length of the blade to ferrule joint or on the very tip of the ferrule. Doesn't make sense to cheapen the head in this critical area to save a few cents on solder. Anyone have any issues with the main blade and ferrule separating on impact?

HMMMM. Makes me wonder if I should trade mine.

I have the Tempest and Scirroco. The blades are definately beefy and tough but that "solder" or "sodder" or whatever is called has always had me concerned. Especially on the Tempest you can see they only soldered it in two points where they could have spent the time doing it the entire length of the ferrule. The Sasquatch and Scirroco only have two contact points to the ferrule so it makes sense.

I always wondered why so many people gave rave reviews to the older zephyrs. I may have to stick with magnus, zwickey, and simmons from now on until they fix it. Shame, blades come very sharp and look very tough.
