Dang POC!! Ash/ Maple??
« on: August 10, 2010, 05:24:00 AM »
I was really feeling it today shooting . Really in the grove. Making 9 out 10 shots in a group the size of a snuff can.... Ever had one of those days? I just couldn't seem to miss....Shot til my fingers hurt...
THEN BAMM !!! Couldn't hit the target even. So my POC's started getting stuck in the rotten loggs behind.. and before I know it I have 3 that were broken behind the point...
So it has me thinking??? Has anyone here shot ash or maple arrows 11/32 with a lower 40's # bow?? Just wondering if I would be able to find ash/maple in a low enough spine (40-45) and wind up with an "shaft" that would be 350-375 grains??
Would be aiming for a 500 grain finished arrow...   :archer2:

I've shot ash for several years out of my lower poundage selfbows with good results. However, my arrows weigh in the mid to upper 600s. Allegheny Mountain Arrowwoods will make you just about any shaft size/weight combination you want. Give them a call.

ash rocks....if I wasnt so hell bent on shooting footed shafts I'd be shooting ash in a heart beat!  It aint rebar...but its about as close to it as you'll find next to maybe bamboo arrows!!!

Can't remember his handle here but do a search for reparrow and you should be able to fix those broken shafts.

Yep, Bill has it right, Reparrows are the way to go. Miss Glenda found three rocks with her arrows at the Alabama state championship this past weekend so I will be fitting these broken arrows with Reparrows today.

Allegheny can help you, probably be 5/16 arrows.

He made some hickory for me, but 55# spine very nice arrows when finished.

Handle is "Jim in Maine," though I'm in Kentucky now.

Just Google "Reparrows" for my Web site.

Ramin would be a real good choice for you, too.  Not as tough as ash, but way better than cedar and not too heavy.  Twig carries them and I have quite a few as well.  A 500 gr finished arrow would be very realistic.

why not shoot barrel tapered ash if weight is an issue 11/32 to 5/16ths?  if you have a table top belt sander you could do it yourself....or just have allegany do it for the same price or close to the same price regular cedars and everything else cost.

Dunno why ash is so cheap to buy compared to everything else on the market. It's a helluva arrow shaft!!!!

I have shot ash before .. Only in the 50-55# range and out of mid 50's # bows. They are great. Guess I'll call Allegheny and see what they can do??
