Ghillie suits............. more questions
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:27:00 AM »
I'm looking at buying a ghillie suit this year since I'll be spending most of my time on the ground.

I'm looking at the Rancho Safari that 3Rivers carries and I'm also looking at some other websites that have cheaper ones made from synthetic string looking material.  The Rancho that 3Rivers carries looks to be made of a good quiet fabric but also looks like it would soak up some water.  How are the synthetic suits as far as noise?

I'm thinking of just getting the short jacket to save $$$ since I'll be sitting on the ground.  Would this be good or should I spend the extra $$$ and get the longcoat?

Thanks and God Bless,
Ken

Ranch Safari is #1 in quality. You get what you pay for. I have the longcoat and really like it. Do not recommend pants and jacket. The longcoat is easy on and easy off when in the field. I pack mine in; slip it on; and I'm ready to hunt. I find this to be easier than hauling stands deep into public land areas where I hunt.

I'd go long coat. Nice to have some cover down to the knees. If sitting the coat drapes over nicely. Nothing aginst Ranch Safari I think they make a very nice product.  I use and have been very happy with a Bushrag synthetic kit that I put together.

I like my separate jacket, pants, and hood. I know several guys who opt not to wear the pants a lot of the time when it's hot. You can't do that with a one piece affair. Mine is a lightweight synthetic string model I got for around $85. I've used it for 3 or 4 years now with no problems. You can buy replacement string for them to repair any spots that are getting worn.

is the synthetic material noisy?  I've got a bunch of good spots that'll put me within spittin' distance of deer and bear so I want a suit that is silent.

no, synthetic is real quiet and very light, also the synthetic wont absorb a lot of water when it's raining, I've stood up after sitting in heavy rain for 30 minutes and just shake off most of the water. the burlap model is a different story though, burlap looks shaggier, but it will suck up water like a dish sponge.

and like what one of the other guys have said, rancho safari is #1 in quality. I've had my long coat for about 5 years now and it looks better than when i first got it cause it's worn in.

Spend the money for the Rancho Safari... I've hunted mine since the last 90's.  The longcoat is perfect at least for me.  Trim your bow arm and wear a long armguard to hold down what is left on the sleeve.  Carry your Shaggie in to your set up and put on when getting ready. I did find the hood a bit restrictive so I removed it. I built a homemade "ghillie" hat and use a facemask.  This works perfectly for me.  Hearing the deer coming in is most of the battle.  When I do and the wind works out the deer are usually in trouble...  Shaggie's are DEADLY on game..!

Ditto what Bill and John said. I have the shaggy long coat.

Mine didn't have a hood but a separate head cover and face cover.

I would recommend them to anyone.

I saw a post in the classifieds that said they run a little large in size.  I didn't want to hijack the thread so I'll ask ya'll.  I'm 5'10" 190lbs, so what size should I get?  I normally wear a large shirt or can squeeze into a medium to make my wife happy once in a while.   :D

Rancho Safari is top notch, I have the shortjacket and gaiters.. They do run Large Im 6'1" 250 and Jerry recommended a large. It fits good with room to spare. I would give him a call if i were you. He will recommended a size for you.

Kenneth, size is based on how tall you are. you'd go with a Medium.. that will probably come down to about your knee to mid shin. which is the recommended proper fit.
all RS "shaggies" have the same girth, 72".
Jerry builds them that way so you can fit all your winter clothing underneath. they have draw tabs at the waist so you can narrow the girth if you want.

The rancho safari suit is worth the money. I have the long coat with the synthetic material, and I paid about the same as you would for a quality tree stand, plus you can't hurt yourself when you fall out of it!
