Who's in or around Mannheim, B-W, Germany
« on: August 13, 2010, 11:35:00 AM »
Well I just arrived yesterday to my permanent duty station near Mannheim.  Wondering who or what's out there nearby.  Or even where to go for archery anything, also if there is local suppliers for some of those little things you might need from time to time somewhere that I won't have to pay overseas shipping.

Really any info would be great.

Thanks in advance,
BDA

You wouldn't happen to be at Coleman Barracks?

HOWDY! i'm over in Baumholder.
glad to know i'm not the only trad user over here now! only guys I've found to talk bows with have been wheelies. they get a real funny look on their face when you tell them you use wooden arrows! LOL

as far as archery places go, talk to your local Rec Center, the one at baumholder lets me use their shotgun range for archery during the week.

as far as shopping goes.. I've been ordering online from 3 Rivers Archery and it's pretty cheap shipping stuff with them if you have an APO address. cost you as much in gas to drive to a local archery shop (and there's not to many around.)

Eric I'll be at Coleman Barracks starting Tuesday.  I arrived late Thursday before a four day weekend and they couldn't get rooms together in time.

Thanks for the info Andrew I'll keep that in mind.  Looking it up on the map you're actually not that far away so maybe we can get a chance to shoot together here after I can get my stuff sent out.

I spent a year and a half there around 1968, worked on helicopters,I was in the 582nd Transportation Company across from the NCO club.

My fondest memory of the place is trudging through the snow at night to the bockwurst stand outside the gate to buy all the steaming bockwurst on hard buns and beer I could carry for the guys in back in the barracks(I lost the coin toss). That stuff was incredible!

If you look up resort areas for Germany there is alot of them that have archery as a program and have archery 3-d courses. Go on youtube and look up traditional archery and many of them will be from Germany. Hope this helps. Mike in Ohio

Baumholder and Mannheim, I thought those posts were closed down when the 8th I.D. was deactivated.  Enjoy your time there guys, travel often and see the country and people.  The Koblenz wine festival should be right around the corner, take a look. It is right below Mainz on the Rhein.

nope, the Germans wanted these bases kept open, for the local economy i guess. right now baumholder is undergoing a huge renovation on all the housing and barracks and what not.

Mannheim is scheduled to close in 2014.  I've heard that Coleman Barracks is kind of a hole but supposedly the rooms I'll be getting are new.

Thanks for the look out on the wine festival I'll keep my eyes open.
