Bear Grizzly or Super Kodiak?
« on: August 16, 2010, 07:12:00 AM »
Hey guys - on the verge of turning 50 I was going to spoil myself with a new bow and am looking at either a Bear Grizzly or Super Kodiak.  Personal fit and cost aside, what say you on the 2 bows?

Carl ;-)

Are you looking at a new one or a vintage bow?  I love the old ones - they are better than the new versions being put out in my opinion.  A 1960 Grizzly would be very cool to have a bow to hunt with that is as old as you.  But I have kind of acquired an extreme fondness for the older Super K's which were built from 1967 through 1976.  Find a good one of those and you would have yourself a great bow!

I like the older Bears too. Go for the Super Kodiak.

I agree with Whip.  Most of the newer Bears, though decent and solid bows, don't hold a candle to the old Bears.  The early Super K's are excellent bows, but I'm fond of the 1959-63 Grizzly; 62" of smooth shooting fun  :)

If you're set on a new Bear, the Super K gets my nod.  Smoother drawing out to a longer draw length (the Grizz starts to stack earlier in the draw, but for most guys that probably isn't an issue - I draw 30+").  I've seen two of the Super K Supremes for sale used at som sponsor sites recently for the price of a new regular SK.

I beg to differ.  It's inspired by the Super K look, but the limb design is all Brandon's.  Increased performance without sacrificing the stability.  You can't go wrong with any of the bows Rose Oak is offering!!!  (Yes, I'm on the waiting list for another  :)  )

A 1970 model Super K was my dream bow as a teenager. However, I couldn't afford their $100 price tag in those days. Now I can't find a LH version of this bow. I owned a Grizzly in those days ($60 from the Tru-Flight store in Monticello, IN). My Grizzly was a 56" model instead of 58"  I liked the bow but I much prefer the beefier riser of the Super K.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the current line of 1-piece Bears. However, my opinion is based purely on aesthitics -- I have done nothing more than picked up a current Super K -- I haven't even  pulled back the string. So my opinion on the performance of these new models is uninformed.

By the way, because I liked the old Super K's is the reason I've had a 1-piece Rose Oak Super Wildcat on order since March -- due Nov. 31, 2010!  Mr. Stahl has discovered how to soup up both the looks and performance of this icon from our archery roots.

If you are talking an older model, the Super Griz out shoots the older Super Kodiaks.  If you are talking new, Super K without hesitation.  I shot three quarters out of the air at 8 feet or so high at 12 to 15 yards with mine. I only tried it the one time and hit three out of four, I shot a few deer with it as well.  The bow is still in the family, I have handed the bow off to my son in-law.  They are good solid versatile bows.

I currently own an 07 model Super Kodiak, the only issue I have with this bow is the grip it doesn't fit my hand the way I would like it too. That being said it is fast and stable, it was my go to bow for Turkey this year.I have 2 older model grizzlies and you can't beat them for feel in the hand and shootability, but I haven't shot the newer model of those.

I see the Super K as Bear's own Howatt-type bow, regardless of which brand came up with the tall riser/short speedy limbs first. It's just a speedier and more stable design than the Grizzly.

The Older Bear Bows are much Nicer looking than the Newer ones and they shoot Great also,Keep looking and you will find a Nice Older Bear,I just got though shooting my Monday Night 3D League with an Old 1 Piece Hoyt Recurve from the 60's and out shot everybody,so nothing wrong with a Old Bow,Good Luck,

I would go with an old one. Or get one of the many copy or repro models out there. The new ones ore ok but just not as good in my opinion.

I'd look for an older Super K. Their longer, and I prefer the larger riser.

I prefer the older 56" Grizzly.  The 58", old or new is a good bow.  I have only shot two Super K's, both shot high for me.  Bill

I'm a fan of the Super Kodiak as well.  The only bow that I've traded away and regretted doing it later.
