Another Javelina question
« on: August 17, 2010, 01:58:00 AM »
Has anyone ever gotten the musk from the gland on a Javies back to use for cover scent. If so how did you get it.. Squeezed or cut and drain it.

You are crazy if you do that Sal.    When I got my last one I had to stand down wind to skin it. There is no way I would put that smell on me or anything close to me on purpose.

I plan on that Larry, I also sent Curtis a email asking... Requesting for the squeaky windmill. The reason for that is, I have a Mech-Heart valve and the windmill should help to come the ticking from my valve.

As far as the gland, I was just asking a question. I know people that take the glands from deer, elk, beaver and even skunk. They make their own cover scent that they spray around them, but not on themselves.

Was thinking if you could get some of the musk and sprayed it on a bush 10 yards from your set-up the Javies would think there is more javies there and be really at ez.

Larry, You going to be hunting w/7th age in 2011? I'll be there Feb 3,4,5 & 6

NOOOOO! don't do that

as for the bush idea, you might as well empty a portable WC there and it will smell very similar

Skunks smell better. Do not cut that gland when skinning. Not pleasant at all.

DO NOT CUT THE GLAND - Stay far, far away from it when field dressing the javie or get a very strong clothes pen. When hunting the javie, you will often smell them before you see them.  The javie does make excellent jerky - I highly recommend it.

Sal, I'm gonna be the odd man out here...drain that gland, brother!  What's the worst that's gonna happen?  Its gonna stink.  That's it. You can't die from something smelling bad. If that was the case...my side gig of cleaning septic tanks woulda killed me a long time ago.

I don't remember when you said you were going to 7th Age but if you are there the same time I am, I will help you drain that gland! For the right price I may even see how it tastes.

Good luck when you go!

Cameron, I'll be there Feb 3,4,5 & 6 2011.

Most likely I won't be doing that, but since there is a lot of people out there that take glands from other game & fur bearing Animals to use as cover or attraction scents I just wanted to know if anyone has done it.

Sounds logical to me man. Guys have been using skunk scent and fox pee as coverscents for years. Why not a javie musk?

Looks like the musk fest won't happen...I believe I'm there jan 3rd thru the 8th.

Never know by Feb I just might give it a try.. going to email someone at the Houston Zoo that might be able to give me some info on how it could be done safely.

I think if you/anyone puts some of it down wind from their set-up it should keep them Javies that get down wind at ez, so they can get a shot off.

Since You'll be there before Me, please give a post on how it goes.. Have fun and a Safe deer season.
