Please!! Educate me!
« on: August 24, 2010, 11:08:00 PM »
I need someone to use very little words and make word pictures for me.

I want to try at least one of those bows that you can interchange everything on but when I go to some place to try to figure out what or which one.

I get like totally confused!! I can buy a riser but most likely I wouldn't ever know what limbs would or wouldn't work on it.

I see prices that make me cringe with some while others seem to be somewhat more reasonable.

LongStick64 posted a picture of his bow and I found it appealing. I read what he said it was and still have no idea what I was looking at other than a bow that looked good to me.

I think I tried something similar to this before but apparently it didn't help me(not anyone Else's fault) it's just me.

Maybe I need to drive to Mike and Connies' place and camp out in his back yard for a month or two...lol (Chill Mike, I won't!)..lol

Thanks in advance!

God bless,Mudd

I'm afraid you could be right. Maybe I could be directed to someplace with the information. I could print it out and put it under my pillow...lol

I would certainly except/entertain an e-mail on the subject.

As it stands right now I can't even shop around because I don't know enough.

By your first post Mudd, about the bow that could interchange everything, I think you are referring to an ILF bow.You have a riser(Wood, phenolic or aluminum) that would be able to accept all sorts of limbs,( recurve, longbow or hybrid)from different manufacturers around the globe with a wide variety of materials(wood, carbon ,ceramic,)and a wide variety of price points. All this you can assemble and dis assemble with just a tug and a pull or push and no tools required. Add to that the 10 percent adjustability in weight of the limbs together with tiller adjustment.
Did that make it clear or did it make it more "muddy".   :bigsmyl:

That makes sense. Thank you@

What am I reading about when they start talking about pinned limbs or this "xyz" riser has been "warfed" ?

Then there are the different limbs, ie Quinns, Win-Wins, ect ect. or you can buy limbs that need to be fitted?

"Plates not included" or "Plates include"?

If I can get my brain wrapped around some of these concepts, there will have been progress!!

I am guessing that there are other ways of doing what the "ILF" system does but does it differently. Sort of like someone either re-invented the wheel(so to speak) or just said to themselves I can take this old riser and with a few modifications, "I can do the same thing!" and cheaper...???

Risor length plays a role in selecting what you want in length of the bow & the weight.

For Instance:
21" risor with long limbs will make a 66" bow
23" risor with medium limbs will make a 66" bow
25" risor with short limbs will make a 66" bow

Before ordering your bow that you want you have to do a little basic math to get the bow length that you want & then select the limb weight that best suits you.

I personally don't have one yet but I did the math & foot work to convert a set of ILF Samick limbs to shoot off of my Hoyt Dorado risor for indoor shooting, wound up with a 62" bow set to 40# at my draw length which was what I wanted.
Zona Custom Recurve: 60" 49# @ 27.5".
Sky Sky Hawk Recurve: 60" 47# @ 27.5".
Genesis 27:3 Now therefore, please take thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and hunt game for me.

That's what I mean Eugene!!

You re-manufactured a set of limbs or modified something to get what you wanted. I assume you did that to avoid the higher cost of already manufactured stuff. But then I realized it may have been as simple as "I did it because I could!"

For someone as unhandy as myself(not an option) and with the prices I've read on the factory jobs(not an option either)...lol I guess I wish in one hand and spit in the other...lol

God bless,Mudd

Mudd my old friend...don't worry mate I was in he same boat and techno panicking.
Its very simple ... if you go with "ILF" it means you can ring a variety of manufacturers whom will have limbs that will fit your bow . These limbs are interchangable from "ilf " riser to riser and generally come in three lengths short , medium and long ... they also come in two configurations recurve and longbow...
If the riser is "ILF " you don't have to change plates etc , you just click in the limbs and away you go .
The risers are both metal and wood depending on your tastes ... its a great way to get a good bow going with numerous and cheap to expensive options available .....
check out SKY archery , 3 rivers [ only there 21" riser is "ILF" compliant ..you'll have to change plates on their smaller 17"riser ... Morrison , Border , Dryad all make wooden risered ILF bows that look just great and i bet they shoot like a million bucks ....
My first port of call would be Jim Belcher at SKY Archery ... good fella and he'll set you up with some gear originally used by the great Earl Hoyt himself ...

Mudd,

How's a man to edumacate a s'uthin man who don't eat grits?  :bigsmyl:

here's another idea: Just call Bob Morrison or one of these guys who sells longbow and recurve limbs for either a longbow or recurve RISER (whichever fits your paw and style best) and then get limbs you want?

That whole ILF thing is kinda snarly... for me, it harkens back to all the tillerin and using allen wrenches to change draw weight on compounds that made me hinky...

I love the Morrison Cheyenne riser Bob made me years back and now got some longbow limbs for it that are sweet... But ole Bob and others are also making the ILF riser/limbs.  They turn up in your addiction alley (Gang used bow forum) regularly, too.  :)

Enjoy the insanity...ain't it grand?   :goldtooth:

I'm with ron w!  I know some of you love the ILF stuff.   I did try it.  Now, I find a bowyer that I trust, have him make a bow(takedown or 1 piece)and just have fun.  If I get the brace right, nock right, and use the arrow that works best, I am home. That is the reason I use AD arrows, they fly out of all of my bows.  For you that love the micro adjustment, tinkering on and on, and buying mutiple limbs, etc, go for it.  The fun for me is in the shooting, not the tinkering.

Mudd,

How many bows do you have now?  I am pretty sure one or two shoot great for you.  Do you really need an ILF bow?  If you decide you do need one, buy a riser from the classifieds and after some research get some used limbs that will do what you want.  It may take a try or two but you will get what you need.

A good idea would be to go to a nearby FITA match and just ask questions.  I have found very few archers and particularly competitors that you can get to be quiet about their bows and tuning them.  If you ask good questions and listen well most of them will talk you into the ground.

hahaha!!!! I can't "micro" anything!!! It's one of the reasons "I hate!!! hate!!! making arrows.

Now you using this language with ILF's has scared me again!!

I would like to shoot one though just so I won't remain ignorant the rest of my life.

Something along the lines I saw in Longstick64's post.
