New bow #3, finished with PICS
« on: May 16, 2007, 10:13:00 PM »
Well I finished bow #3 a week or so ago. This is the first one with homemade ground laminations and also the first one with snakeskins. It is bamboo core with osage veneers. The skins are Texas rat snake. They seemed to go perfect with the osage and redheart colors. The riser is cocobolo with osage and paduuk stripes. The heel is bocote and redheart and the overlays are bocote and redheart. Limb tips are bocote over white glass and redheart. It is 56" 51@25"

Thanks all, I got the skins from online. A place called American Headhunter I believe. They have several varieties and got here very quick. It shoots good, came out a couple lbs heavier than I am used to shooting. Billy it is modeled after a Centaur. I love the Centaur design so when I decided to try and build a bow myself, I incorperated many of the features of it.  Handshock is as minimal as any bow I have shot with the exception of the Centaurs. Jim's bows are the best IMHO. I thought I knew what shock free was until I shot one of the Centaur double carbons. After owning one of them, I believe I now know what it means. Building these has been alot of fun and a great learning experience. Several headaches along the way though. It certainly gives you a greater respect for some of the work that todays bowyers do.
I compare it to watching pro baseball players throwing or hitting, you watch them play but can't appreciate how good they are unless you have played some ball yourself.  Steve

I've seen the bow in person and believe me the pictures just don't do it justice. Steve is a very skilled craftsman in his own right and I can tell you that he has the utmost respect for Jim Neaves and his Centaur bows. I got to watch Steve do alot of the work on his bows and I can tell you he is a perfectionist. He is also one of the best custom knife makers that I have seen. I hope that he doesn't mind me telling you but he does all of this beautiful work with just one eye. He lost the vision in one eye due to a accident a few years ago.  Keep up the good work Steve.  Brokenwing

Seriously sweet bow. If I could make a bow like that, I would never have to buy any other bow. That looks like a bow you'd see in a custom catalog.
