Bow grip options...checkering?
« on: September 02, 2010, 10:45:00 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I was out shooting yesterday, and it has been HOT up here in teh NE.  I noticed with the heat, and my sweat, my palmer recurve really wanted to slip out of my hand...this 0bviously caused accuracy problems, and got me thinking I need some type of grip on this bow other than bare, smooth wood.

What are the options for adding some type of grip?  Th riser is too beefy for the slip on type grips.

Also, was thinking of maybe having someone checker the grip this winter.  Who does that type of work?  Thanks, Mike

I stippled a grip on a recurve I built. That worked pretty good. I am still practicing checkering though. Not ready to try it on a bow yet.
The Blacktail recurves I have Norm has checkered the grip. Other bowyers do checkering too...don't know if they would do your bow or not. Good luck. I think it is must on a bow.

Sherry Abraham checked my personal bow a few years ago. The difference is night and day. Do a search and you'll come up with her website.

Checkering is really nice when done well; although sometimes it obscures some of the beautiful wood. Mountain bike inner tube works great in wet conditions, and it can be 'temporary'. Put it on with a little hair spray and it will stay in place nicely.

I think you can get a shur-grip on there goose. I've heard of guys doing it with black widows, which would be more difficult than a palmer. The checkering looks better, but I like the shur grip for a more solid, consistent grip and I've had both.

I didn't think I would like grip checkering. I feared it would promote torque during the release and follow-through.  I bought a Blacktail Elite VL and it had a checkered grip. I love the feel because it is very secure and comfortable. I've ordered a Schafer to be checkered also.  The picture below is his "fish scale" style. As a post above noted, he does stiples also. I've never seen or felt one of those.

the Dale Dye job is good checkering.
The fishscale. , too rough for the quality of the bow, IMHO. God Bless You all,Steve

Funny thing: I like checkering just as much as the next bloke, and have one Silvertip in the stable with such, and another on the way. Over here, there is virtually no such thing as a day where you can shoot your bow without sweaty hands. Even on my smooth handle bows, it doesn't seem to worry me.

Mike, get the checkering. Shooting on days like we've had was exactly why I got the checkering on my Schafer when I ordered it. Leather will work also but you're right, it will change the feel.
