string making question, I am having a moment
« on: September 03, 2010, 05:08:00 PM »
I started to make a string last night with my jig and my mind went blank. To top it off, I can find my DVD. If you are making a string for a 62 inch recurve, do you adjust your lengh on your board to 58, 60 or 62. Secondly, do you start you twist at 8 Iinches or 7 and your loop around 3?

You'll probably want to build a 59-inch string for a 62-inch bow.  That's the current AMO standard, though some would say you'll need a 58-inch string.  Bows are different.  Difficult to say which will work best until you make one.  Might you have an old string you can measure.

How far you start from the end of the string to begin making the loop is a personal choice.  I usually start about 11 inches from either end for a recurve string, about 7-8 inches for a longbow string. Thus. the actual string length at its longest before you start twisting will need to be 81 inches -- 59 + 11 + 11.  I usually twist about 3 inches for the top loop and 2 1/2 for the bottom loop.  Good luck.

For string length, I subtract 4" from the AMO.  I start my twist at 7 1/2", that's how my jig is set up.  For narrow limbed bows, I use 2", for wide limbed bows, I use 2 1/2" to 3", depending on how wide and whether it has tip overlays.  Bill

Length depends on the bow.  Measure an existing string to know for sure.  I've seen recurve strings vary from 2.5" to 6" shorter than the AMO, although AMO does say 3" shorter.

Where the twist starts depends on the bundle length and your rate of twist.

Sorry I can't be more specific.
