scout trip today
« on: September 11, 2010, 10:02:00 PM »
My buddy aka rogers here on Tradgang & I went scouting today on some public land.  Between the two of us we saw 17 deer and 3 of them were bucks.  Not bad for public land at all.  Hope they stick around for the opening weekend.

Rogers said I saved his life today.  He was just about to step on this nasty fellow when I saw it and sounded the warning  SNAKE!!!!!!  He did his posturing thing, you know show his white mouth and extend the fangs but it was basically a bluff.  I told Rogers his bluff wouldn't work on the snake so he might as well quit posturing like that.

The snake just stared at Rogers indifferently until Rogers poked him with his bow.  The snake did his own posturing at that point, cottonmouth showing and fangs ready to go.  I was able to get Rogers to quit making the snake mad and we eased around him.

We had taken our bows along to try for some squirrels and evidently on Rogers part to aggravate snakes with it.  I saw 3 squirrels but never had a shot.  Rogers on the other hand drilled his 1st one with a recurve.  To make it sweeter it was a bow he had made himself earlier this year.  He told me this is his 1st trad kill.  I'll leave it up to him to fill in the details.

Way cooler than my day today! Thanks for sharing, and I hope the snake gets over it.

And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Great story Pac!

I do question your choice of friends though..lol Folks that play with snakes... well that just ain't right.

Something like that could make me lose my breath and maybe some body fluids.(I'm not renown for my running abilities!)

I'm trying to recall if in all of our communications back and forth if you've ever mentioned those little "heart attacks" before...lol

Good read and sounds like you two enjoyed your time out together.

Thanks for sharing(most of it anyway)..lol

God bless,Mudd

Pac,

That is great.  Squirrel and gravy sounds good.  How were the ticks on your trip?  I sure will be glad when the ticks go away this fall.

I found 1 seed tick on me before I jumped in the shower.  I keep feeling them crawling on me but when I look there is nothing there.

Tyler I can't hunt opening weekend.  I'll be fishing a bass tournament 2-3 Oct at Hamilton.  Forgot about that after seeing all those deer today.

Mudd my choice of rogers as a friend does have a reason.  Snake gets made at him and not me.  To the snake I am the good guy and hopefully do not warrent a bite. Plus rogers is 22 years younger than I am.  He makes a fine pack mule  but it comes at a cost. I carry the squirrels he shoots and he carries the deer, bear, elephants or whatever I manage to shoot.  Works out fairly well for me as long as he doesn't shoot really big squirrels.

Ill haul deer or bear gladly but your on your own with elephants, aint no way Im crossing that big body of water.

Had a great day and found some great spots, cant wait for the A.R.R.O.W hunt I know there will be some meat hitting the ground.  Cant beat the boat ride right to your stand where you know all those walk in hunters cant get to.

Im more proud of that squirrel than anything right now.  He was about 20 yards across a ravine from me and about 35 or 40 foot up in the tree and just poked his head out around the tree and I took the shoot, cant hit'em if ya dont shoot.  Nailed him in the top of the head, those STG heads did a number on him. I normally dont shoot up in trees so I dont lose my arrows but I was so tired from climbing those ridges I didnt care lol.

Had a great day Pac.

Those weren't ridges they were offsping of the Mattahorn!  My tongue still has boot marks on it from stepping on it all day as I tried to suck in oxygen.

To look at me now you wouldn't know I was once a lean mean fighting machine.  :saywhat:
