String Twist
« on: September 12, 2010, 11:30:00 AM »
I have been trying to set up my new bow and was adjusting the brace height to a suggested height. To even get close to this height my string hardly has a twist to it. How far can you un-twist a string and still safely shoot it ?

I think you need to have at least 1 twist per inch of string.   :)

I think that you need to lengthen your string by 1/2" then twist to desired brace. I agree with RTH that 1 twist /in would be safe.

What length is your string at your desired brace? I can check and see what I have. Let me know. Ed

Thanks for the info guys. I'm waiting to hear from the bowyer what the recommended brace height is. The height I was trying to acheive was recommended by a guy who has several of the same bows. Once I got to where it had no twists I was afraid to shoot it, guess its good I didn't. I'll get it figured out shortly I hope.
Ed, thanks for the offer man. I'll see what shakes out.

I have made a few, and it took me a little while to realize that there needs to be nearly 1 twist per inch.  I would start stretching the string as soon as I got it off the jig, and it would come undone. I just couldn't figure it out.  Then I started twisting it before stretching, and no more problems.
