Even I can shave with my broadheads now!
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:06:00 PM »
I am absolutely the worst at sharpening anything but especially broadheads. I am the only person that can make a head more dull by sharpening it than it was before I started. I have tried every sharpener out there. Until now I could not get a broadhead razor sharp.

I finally bought a sharpened from Grizzly Industries similar to the one Alaska Bowhunting Supply carries. It is the one with the wheels for a grinder. It comes with 2 wheels but I only needed to use the polishing wheel with polishing rouge.

I was able to get my broadheads scary sharp and shaving hair within 10 strokes per side on the wheel. I sharpened 5 broadheads razor sharp within the time it would take me dull one side of one head. It is amazing.

Did I just hear a collective sigh of relief from the deer herd?   :D

Oh well, congratulations, anyway!

I saw that one in my Grizzly catalog and was wondering if it was as good as the one from Alaskan supply. I guess so. Is the grit they use diamond dust?

I doubt the grit is diamond dust for $33. But from what I see you don't need it. It not only shaves hair but cuts arms when it does it. I found out the hard way when I saw the blood.

The first broadheads I sharpened were the older model Brown Bear Abowyer heads. 10 strokes on just the polishing wheel and they were shaving and arm cutting sharp.

Today I took a double bevel rusty dull zwickey. Three storkes on the grit wheel and 10 total strokes on the polishing wheel each side of the braodhead got them shaving sharp. Who says sharpening broadheads is hard. Ha! I died and went to heaven!

I looked into the different sellers on line and they all look like they come from the same mfg.
None of them use diamond grit as I thought that I saw but some type of abrasive grit for grinding in your angle and then rouge for polishing on the other wheel. I ordered the one from Grizzly last nite and striped my grider ready for the wheels to arive. I'll post my results in a few days. I talked to a friend who uses them and he swears by them, he says why would you want to spend an hour or more shapening your broadheads when you can do them all in minutes and they are scary sharp.
I cant wait...

the 'grinding' dust is likely just graphite- I have one of those sets of wheels I got from a Missouri company back in the early 90's who said they invented the paper wheel system.

It works very well indeed....my only caveat would be to make sure you don't heat up the broadhead or knife in the process- because taking the temper out of the steel is counterproductive.

Glad you found your perfect vision of sharpness.

Do these go on a 3450 rpm grinder or 1725 rpm?

Ray those hogs of yours are in deep trouble when I come down next spring. If I don't kill myself with deadly broadheads first! Ha!

I barely have to apply any pressure with this system. I was careful about the temper.

Somebody, Joebuck?, started a thread on here last year about this system. So I got one. Once you figure it out it is soooo easy it's scary. I can take a very dull kitchen knife and get it razor sharp in about 47 seconds.

Here is the link for the one I bought, I think you could get any make and they will all work. I would just buy the wheels, what ever size fits you grinder.

Here is a link to the ABS one and a link for a video they have about using the sharpener.

They make it look harder than it is.
