Irish Setter by Red Wing Hunting boots
« on: May 18, 2007, 08:56:00 PM »
I just bought a pair of Irish Setter Elk tracker hunting boots. After trying on about 40 pair of other brand boots, most of the top names. I got these for $150. They are a better fit than the $300 pairs that I tried on and feel like bedroom slippers. Anyone else tried these? What do you think of them long term. How did they hold up?

You did good. My last pair of Irish Setters lasted 12 years! Actually could've gone a few more than that.
Someday you and I will take the Great Hart by our own skill alone, and with an arrow. And then the Little Gods of the Woods will chuckle and rub their hands and say, "Look, Brothers. An Archer! The Old Times are not altogether gone!"

Thanks Steve, I sure like the feel. I bought them at a small country store about 4 miles from my house. I haven't found a price that good anywhere else.

Little John, I'm not sure about the difference between the elk tracker and the wing shooters which I have.  I love the boots.  They are super light, very comfortable and very supportive.  My only complaint is that the codura cloth fabric is fraying and the boots are less than 6 months old.  and some of the stitching seems stressed.  I hope mine last 12 years, but at this rate I doubt they will.  Still like them.

a friend i turkey hunted with a couple weeks ago in East Tenn., had the new Irish Setter Snake boots, and we walked some steep slopes chasing gobblers, and he said they were the best pair of Snake boots he had ever owned. Real good product.

I have two pairs of insulated Irish Setters that I have owned for about 15 years -- alternated between them and used them just for hunting.  About a month ago I brought them back to Red Wing and had them resoled.  Figure to get another 10 years at least out of them.  Best boots that I have ever owned.  Tox Collector

Little John,

Are your new boots (Elk Tracker) all leather?  Also, are they very light weight?

Thanks, Paul

There seems to be a couple of different model numbers that go along with the name Elk Hunter.  What is the difference between the different models?

A good quality pair of leather boots are hard to beat for comfort and longevity. On the other hand (or foot), I'm kind of anxious to try out a new pair of boots that will be available next month from Robinson footwear. Punch up  www.troutdoors.com  and hit on their footwear, then Scentblocker/Robinson mid-boots. Brand new line. They have removeable scentblocker/carbon gaiters that you can regenerate, which sounds interesting. Plus they are waterproof; have gel absorbers; are ultralightweight; and are pull-ons with double loops for guys who can't tie their boots without coming up for air. Cabelas will be carrying them too but Redmonds is free shipping. They should be excellent for most bowhunting until the weather gets cold. bw

these are the ones I'm always saving for:
 http://whitesboots.com/store/product.php?category=Boots&id=682  (or the 'cowboy packers').

have never been disappointed yet with a pair of Whites Boots. kind of spendy though, yeah. but worth it. and they have heels, too, which, as my daily boots all have heels, makes my hunting boots just so much more comfortable (and less apt to hurt me).

but man, yeah, those at Redmonds (knee-length:  http://archery-experts.stores.yahoo.net/drsebo.html),  those do look supercool. and they're guaranteed warm, yeah? that's my main requirement. sorrels work well for warmth, but aren't much in the quiet department (that could just be me, of course), and they don't last long either.

I'm primarily a chukar hunter and I bought the uninsulated elk trackers (I don't think they make them uninsulated any more).  I only got one season of hunting and training out of them before the rimrock ate them to peices.  Blew out the stitching on the nylon uppers side-hilling, and the soles were soft enough they didn't last long and weren't terribly comfortable on the sharp rock.  I went back to my Danner Quarries.  That said, they were a very light boot and before I destroyed them, were very comfortable.  I think for something tamer like elk hunting, they'd have been fine.

Those Robinson Mid-Boots sound pretty cool, but they're so bizarre looking, I couldn't bring myself to wear 'em!

Looks like something Batman would wear in the woods!  :)

Paul, if you try some on you won't care how they look---tried them at the ATA show in January and instantly decided we needed to carry them in our store (and that I needed a pair for myself).

I'm into function more than fashion. I was thinking more along the lines of the mid-boot rather than Batman's knee boot. With the carbon gaitor I'm not sure the high ones would be necessary. The mid-boot might be all you'd need. bw

Little John,
I got a pair a Irish Setters 3 years ago for an upcoming elk hunt.  Bought them for light weight, being waterproof, and heard that Irish Setter was a good brand.  Wore them for spring turkey season which was real wet for a couple of days that year and they did fine.  Next time I wore them was in the mountains of Idaho and as soon as it started to rain and they were soaked.  It was no fun having wet feat in 34 degree temps.  My back-up 10 year old danners did far better.  Wrote Irish Setter about the problem and my experience and they pretty much told me "too bad about that one and hope you try our product again".  Maybe they have a good product, but the company won't stand behind them.  Was not impressed.  dino

Yeah Barry, I see the Mid-boot you're talking about now.  I was looking at the Knee-boot.

I wonder how high the Carbon gaiter would come up?
