Having Pounds Let out of a Bow

I have a custom bow I am planning to send back to the bowyer to have some pounds reduced.  Can anyone tell me if they have ever done this, what has to be done physically to the bow, if it has any negative affect, cost, and any other considerations or input.  Thank you!

I recently had a habu t/d reduced from 53lbs to 49 @29 due to several neck and shoulder surgeries. It cost me about $225 and I have noticed no negatives.

Just had Jim Reynolds reduce my T-Mag from 55# to #50 due to shoulder issues. Cost me a $100, but very well worth it for me.

Talk with the bowyer first.  Some bows will give up weight and others will not.  You are going to pay for labor and a refinish in most cases.

Yup, like Mike said. I have seen some thick hill bows be reduced as much as 8#s but most if they are able to be done are 3-5#s max. Shawn

I expect it will be no charge as the bow was marked lower that it actually pulls.

Seeking Trad Deer.,, I just reduced a T/D Recurve for Biggie I made him years ago a total of #10. It took me less than a hour. There several ways to skin a cat but most importantly ask your bowyer has he ever done it. Be cautious if he just "traps" it to get 3-4#. Well I definitely feel as though I paid too much to have mine reduced. Any bowyers out there with lots of experience at it that wouuld like to reduce another set of Habu limbs for me?

Hello BD, don't beat yourself up too bad. Your bowyer probably spent 2-4 hours doing it. The procedure he probably used was done by hand and not power tools. Then he had to refinish the limbs with clear sealer probably 3 light coats. i do have a question, did he "trap" the bow limbs? ( back glass width is noticeably narrower than belly glass?)

I've investigated this for two bowns and done it with one, like others, shoulder surgery drove the change.

How much weight can be taken off depends on the design of the bow. I had 7# taken off a D/R lonbow (Mike Treadway) and the cost was about $100 + shipping. The bow shoots as well as ever, which is very good. My Wes Wallace can only give up about 3#, similar cost was quoted, but I haven't given up on working up to the full draw weight just yet.

For each the bowyer is pretty much just charging the same as for refinishing, which is required. Of course, others may have a different approach.

I had Herb Meland take five pounds off of my three piece LB and trap the limbs. I paid extra and he added some bullseyes.
