Spine Calc and Black Widows
« on: September 21, 2010, 02:49:00 PM »
I have a BW PSA, 58@28. Going through the spine calc, it just seems off. It says I need a 76.8#spine. (using -1/8 center)

I know there is huge room for form differences etc..
I know it's just one tool, alone with bare shafting, visual etc.

Question for the BW shoooters here.. does the calc hold true for these bows ?

Your thoughts please

I don't know how the calculator works with them but I know that widows do take a pretty stiff arrow from my experience with my uncles widow.

I shoot a PSA II 54# @ my 27" and it likes  a 28" 2117 with 175 up front.

I haven't worked with Widows but it's probably pretty close. Due to the way the window is cut they tend to take a stiffer shaft than we'd usually suspect for the bow's draw weight. Doesn't meen they hit any harder, they just like a stiff arrow.

I thought it just me but my PSRX prefers a stiffer arrow than what I get from Stu's Calc.

I just got done with a test drive PCH and have a PSA.  They are one pound different in weight.  The calculator says I need a 74# dynamic spine arrow for the widows.  However, both shoot best with something around 55-60# dynamic spine.  They didn't take exactly the same arrow to shoot best, but they are within 25 gr. point weight of matched.  They do shoot a wide range of stuff, but 60# dynamic spine bare shafts shot like bullets with no sign of weak flight at all.  I don't think I could have gone over 65# without showing stiff, but I couldn't do that without going below 8 gpp. with my arrows.

What is really odd is they both needed at least 25 more grains on the front of my arrows than what I shoot in my MOAB that is only a couple pounds heavier draw and cut 1/8" out from center.   My MOAB also shoots a faster arrow from what I can tell particular a heavy arrow.

I have been reading some stuff on the Widow Wall, and I have been a little surprised sometimes to see the arrows people are shooting.  They are not near as stiff as I thought I would need when I got my bow.  Now that I have gotten some experience with them, I can see why they are shooting the arrows they listed.  However, others are shooting a lot stiffer arrows so I don't know for sure.  I don't see where I was doing anything to cause a false stiff arrow flight. Nock fit was ok and no grip torque from what I could tell.

I shoot a PLV  #58lb at 28in.  It shoots 200 grains up front best with 75 lb spined woodies.  Remember these bows shoot fast and deliver alot of energy per pound of draw weight.  76.5 is probably not that far off.  Tables are just starting points.  I see a lot of difference in tuning by changing tip weights, arrow length, nock tightness, etc.   You just have to experiment alot to find what each bow likes.  Hope that helps.
