Finally Clicking Again. Need some help.
« on: September 21, 2010, 08:12:00 PM »
Long story short, I shot fanatically as a teen. After HS, USAF, marriage, life, etc... I got back into archery about 2 1/2 - 3 months ago.

Now, after being frustrated about getting my ability to group like I used to, I finally got this 15 yard group tonight after about 6 volleys.

My groups have been getting better and I really didn't think I'd make it this season. I just may get there. I'll limit my shots to my comfort range, which will be close.  Archery season here in NC goes into Nov and deer season totally ends Jan 1st, usually. But it's been WAY too hot here to hunt effectively anyway.

Now, what I need is to get your input on broadhaeds. I want to shoot two bladed heads. Something like the Zwickeys in 100gr.

My setup is Bear Super Grizzly #50 @ 28. I draw 29. Arrows are 1916s 31.2"BOP 5" feathers. The points on these are 75gr. I know there probably ain't an animal such as a two blade 75gr head.

What do you recommend?

You're not going to like it.  My suggestion is to move up to 2018's with a 125 grain broadhead.  Zwickies are fine. Those 31" 1916's with broadheads will be a bit underspined for the bow and weight you are shooting.  Just my opinion. You could possibly cut that 1916 shaft down as short as possible and try it. Might work.  Good luck.

On a side note I can relate to lots of shooting as a teen and then getting side tracked with school, USAF, marriage and life ;-)...Van

The 1916 are working. Showing about 37 KE. I thought about cutting them down a bit but what I have seems to be working fine.

Searching the Magnus' after the above post I found they make an 85gr four blade, but no two blade 85gr. Odd. But viewing a few magnus videos and readin some write-ups they appear to be highly recommended.

Pick one bro & stick with it. Doubt you could make a mistake.  FTR, suggest a heavier head than 100gr. These lighter heads are typically compound shooters delight. Get ahold of a few around 135-150gr screw-ons. 2-blades fly perfect (after trueing in a spin test) & easy to sharpen. Good luck.

I'm going to agree with Van, 1916's are too weak.  They may do fine with field points, but when you mount broadheads I believe you are going to have some flight issues.  As I recall, a 1916 static spines around 50-52 lb AMO.  If you are actually drawing 29" you are shooting 52-53 lb.  Add 10 lb for the center cut and another 10 for the 30" arrow, you are looking at needing a 70 lb arrow for a 125 gr point.  Shoot those 1916's through paper and I believe you will find them to be pretty weak, even with the 75 gr point.
Good judgement comes from experience.  Experience comes from bad judgement.

Van/Tx & Fletcher are spot-on with their comments about your 1916's; you put on a decently wide head like a Magnus I or Zwickey Delta and you may all of a sudden see some pretty dodgy broadhead arrow flight and yes think about some heavier bigger heads than those durn winky-wimp 85 grain doo-dads   :D

My shelf set-up is 3/16 off center. And I have shot a three blade I borrowed from another shooter that's 100gr thinking the same as you guys. Looking for poor flight I was surprised it flew just as straight. It shot the same straightness as the 75gr field point.

If I do go 100gr I'll probably have to cut down the arrow to raise spine. The bow is over 30 years old. I have not put it on a scale to check the actual weight. It has been stored inside most those years in a climate controlled environment. Maybe some time in the garage while away in the USAF.  If I go over 100gr I know the 1916s are too weak but I'm trying to stick with them. Brace is 6.5" with Flemish B55 string with center serving.

Thanks for your input. The Magnus Stinger looks like a winner unless you have other ideas.

I appreciate the help.

Bud,
Last time we shot you were tinkering with my 175gr. field points.  Musta been different arrows.  Closest thing I've got to what your looking for is some Magnus 2-blade (not Stinger)screw-ins, but weight is going to be about 135 gr. E-mail me your address if you want to try them.

Thanks Richard. I think we were shooting those arrows out of the Longbow. I went to the recurve and that's what I shot so poorly at the Stick and String shoot. After that shoot I've been trying to get in about 20-30 minutes a day working towards improvement. If I went above 100gr I will definitely need stiffer arrows. I sure liked those 3Rivers Trads you made up.  :)

Gotta work on my form too. I tend to pluck the string occasionally. Smooth releases result in smooth flight for sure. Got a nice callus formed on the midddle finger.

Looking forward to shooting with you again soon.

Bud,
Yes, I was remembering Rockingham and you were shooting the long bow.  The Stick & Wheel shoot humbled everybody.  You're welcome to the Magnus heads if you want to try them, but I'm guessing you'll have to shorten those arrows to get them to fly. You could come down to 29-1/2", but the only way to know if that would be enough is to try it.  At their current length, I'm suprised they're not weak as is.  Some folks orient 2-blades vertically and use the back edge of a blade against their index finger as a "draw stop", but I prefer some excess around sharp objects.  A 2016 of the proper length might be another option for you.

Thanks for the offer. Might take you up on it. I need a good broadhead target first. The home-made target might wreak havoc on the blades. Straw bales aren't the best, but it's good for now with the field points.

I'll get the wife to mark an arrow tonight when I draw back to see how much room I have to work with.

There is a 85grain stinger.

Might not be able to tell the difference.

If you're good with a file/sander you could make em 75grn I bet
