How come I'm not seeing squirrels?
« on: September 22, 2010, 10:04:00 AM »
I have a bout 15 acres of mostly oaks and hickories of several types. There is evidence of squirrel activity all around the hickories right now, lots of acorns that are just starting to fall.

There are at least four squirrel nests in different parts of the woods. But in two dozen walks scouting for deer sign and picking up hickory nuts, I have only seen a squirrel twice. I have been in the woods at all times of day. I saw one in the middle of the day and one just after sunset.

Are they nocturnal, or something? We do have a couple of great horned owls in the area, so I can see why the squirrels would be nervous, but they are eating. WHEN???

Jim, in western Kentucky now.

Most likely just staying in the trees.  If the nuts and acorns are plentiful, the squirrels don't need to move around much.  Lots of leaves for cover right now, too.

I suggest you take yourself a chair and just spend some quiet time in different sections of your woods.

I'd be willing to bet that you have way more than two...lol

We were out the other day and the squirrels were in the tree tops cutting nuts and eating them, we just listened for a lot of nuts or shells dropping and began to look then.

Works for me too.
Always seems when I scout an area for deer spot I never see a squirrel.

Get out there and sit still awhile it seems like there's a squirrel metropolis going on around me.

I've seen them thick as fleas in one spot of the woods, then some days later, it's like they all got sucked up by some alien sky-ship, just gone, vanished....then they're back. Wierd. Maybe they just get bored looking for their nuts all day and go to sleep, sort of a semi-hibernation.
