What do you miss hunting??
« on: September 25, 2010, 08:43:00 AM »
The topic about pheasants got me thinking about how much i miss working the springer spaniels in the field.  The pheasant population in PA is decimated and we do not hunt them anymore.  We used to raise them on my dads farm and bring our friends up to hunt them with the dogs but dont anymore.  I just really miss how much fun it is to hunt upland birds and watch a good dog do what it is bred for.

So what about you guys...what game animal do you miss hunting that is not around as much today????

I miss hunting squirrels with my Dad. Whenever I went to see him we would do a bit of squirrel hunting; it was nice to be in the woods with him. Since he died back in 1988, I haven't hunted the little tree rats. Would be fun to see him with his .22 and a batch of fox squirrels again.

That's what I was thinking about when I read the topic title   :smileystooges:

I miss hunting ducks and squirrel with my dad. I miss deer camp with my father-in-law and uncle (ArkyBob's dad).    :campfire:   If all stays in proper order, someday, someone will miss hunting with me. I love making memories while hunting with ArkyBob's son Brad and especially enjoyed taking my daughter on her first successful duck hunt last year.

I look forward to being able to share hunts with my grandsons (or and/or granddaughters) some day. I hope to make loving memories with them and that they, in turn, will miss hunting with me, and then make memories of their own with their kids, etc. Such is the circle of life.

I miss hunting rabbits with my dad. We had beagles and dad loved his Stevens single shot .410.

Pheasents would be one for me too. They have become sparce,I haven't seen a rooster in years. Sheds are another one. Too many guys that are making it a second job/competition. You had better be next to the animal when they drop if you want one. When I was a kid you could still find lots of sheds clear through the fall.

I would be the Quail here, my Dad and his Brothers grew up hunting Quail and my older bro got to do it quite a bit with them, but just as I was getting started they were almost wiped out by the winter of 77-78 and never came back, we took the dogs to the grouse woods for a while, also a lot of fun but the Turkeys have almost done away with that, not enough birds to own a dog now.

I miss hunting bears. This is the first year in almost 14 years that i am not able to hunt bears due to being unemployed. The early fall smells and sounds make me wish i was up there. Bill

Upland birds.  I don't have a dog now and the birds are too far and few to shoot them around here.  I still get my share of ducks and geese to keep the wing shooting side of me happy each year.  I have to get back out west one of these years.

I miss seeing deer in South Jersey. But I miss spending a week with my dad and brother hunting. Family and attitude changes have put us apart.
