Insert Iron
« on: September 26, 2010, 03:22:00 PM »
I'm making up some carbons and used Insert Iron to glue in the brass inserts. I wanted to remove the insert to shorten the shaft 1/4 inch so I tried heat to loosen the insert. But it looks like once it's glued, it's glued.

Does anyone know a way to remove the insert after having used this glue or do I have to take the 1/4 inch off of the nock end???

You might try the drill bit method, get a drill bit that fits inside the shaft. And insert from the nock end and then whip the shaft toward the floor nocking out the insert, acts like a reverse slide hammer.I do this method first and wad up a blanket to catch the insert and drill bit for when the come flying out.But sometimes nothing short of cut the shaft will get some inserts out.

Screw in a field point and slowly put heat on it from a torch.  Keep checking until the glue loosens.  Use pliers to grip the point and twist point to remove insert.  I have done this with a number of glues.  Dont have any experience with "insert iron".

I also use Insert Iron, and like it.  To remove an insert from a carbon shaft, I hold the end of the shaft with a point installed in boiling water for 20 or so seconds, and then pull out the insert by grabbing and pulling on the point with pliers.  If it doesn't work the first time, hold it in boiling water for another 20 seconds, etc.  It will eventually work, and evidently the boiling water is not hot enough to damage the shaft, at least not in my experience.

Ditto put in a field point and heat it, then pull out the whole mess. Great stuff!

Try not to twist, just pull straight back
