Anyone make their own Archery stuff? Looking for patterns!
« on: September 27, 2010, 03:47:00 PM »
So Countrygirl here on the forum suggest i make a back quiver from a pair of pant legs from some old jeans. so it got me wondering, does anyone here make their own gear?

Does any one have any patterns they wouldnt mind sharing?

i was contemplating on whether i could make a hip quiver too. but not sure how the dynamics work so the arrows dont slip out.

Also something i used to do when i was little and had a fiberglass bow, was take a bag from the salt used to fill the water softner and filled it with pine needles to make a make shift target. didnt last terriably long but it made us kids clean the yard for my dad. Hahaha!

so any ideas would be cool... as well as post pics of what you make! id love to see!

Make a lot of my own items & have for a good while. Gloves, armguards, arrows, feathers, stringers, leather possibles bags, bone sewing tools, etc. Repair everything I can also. It's fun & rewarding.

Tandy Leather published a book of archery patterns and there's the book _Bow Accessories: Equipment and Trimmings You Can Make_ edited by Volkmar Hubschmann.

I've also seen some fairly detailed build-alongs on-line.

Look under main forums for the how to section...should be a good starting place.
I made a few quivers....but typically from no patterns.

I do, but it's mostly out of leather.

As far as patterns are concerned, most archery gear isn't terribly complex. If you spend enough time looking at pictures of what you want to make, and make some practice patterns on craft paper, you should be able to figure it out.

Also, the homemade target works for sure, but try using grocery bags instead of pine needles. Works great!

Don't forget your own imagination.

If you could find a men's used large or larger leather coat in some of the thrift stores then you would have two quivers from the sleeves alone. Then some creative thinking and you have the two quivers and some scrap from the body to make leather straps and such. Don't forget sheepskin wool seat covers also. They can be found occasionally.

I made this belt quiver from scrap leather from a local leather shop's scrap bin. Total cost is less than $5. The bottom was made from saddleskirting leather wet formed by placing a cut out circle in between plastic cups and pressing one cup into the other to get the leather to have a dome shape. Drilled holes with a 1/16 drill bit. Used fabric glue and clothes pins to hold it together while drying and then punched holes in key places. I still need to stitch the back seam along the spine of the quiver. The dark brown body leather is thinner leather. The spine and top rim are doubled over leather straps wet formed and held in place by clothes pins until dry.

The only pattern was in my head. It kept changing on me and was hard to keep up with. :D

I make some stuff like my bows and have started playing with some arrows recently but I have a habit of being very purpose driven so I dont try to spread myself too thin.  That being said I have gotten pretty adept at "re-purposing" common items and seeing potential in otherwise useless things.  Recently I saved a bunch of packing foam (not the crumbly stryofoam) and with it, some duct tape and some good old ingenuity I made a pair of targets.  I also save feed  bags from chicken and cattle feed for targets, you can stuff them with plastic or other feed bags or an old worn out tarp or heavy foam sheets.  Im just gonna shoot the heck out of a target anyhow and the point of a target is to stop an arrow not drain my wallet.

Now back to your post it got me to thinking, I had heard of someone making a quiver out of the sleeve of a leather coat acquired at a good will store for next to nothing.  Cut the sleeve off to the desired length, add a rigid bottom with a foam plug for the arrow heads to rest in, fold the top over (possibly add some fur for added flair) and install a strap.  Made lots of sense to me since I do not consider myself a leather worker and the basic form is already there with a few simple modifications you have repurposed what is essentially useless.  Best of all you get two quivers out of each one and you still have a vest LOL.  Just kidding on the vest part.

Also my wife loves Hobby Lobby (can I say that here?) which is a very large craft store chain, since I get dragged along on occasion I find myself looking at things from a hunter prospective.  Found some basic brown canvas like material bags with a simple adjustable strap that I purchased for each of our hunting backpacks.  Helps to keep small items organized and not lost at the bottom of your pack or you can pack a small field lunch in them.  Not my handy work but for less than a buck I put it to great use that the maker probably never imagined.
Hunt fair, hunt hard, no regrets.
