I took my pop out deer hunting the other day. It started like any other hunt, we saw a bunch of does and some coyotes, but nothing we could shoot. We took a long walk down past an old tank, and saw a real nice 4x3 blacktail buck. The race was on and we headed down an old road to cut off the buck. We stopped in the bottom of a drainage to take a break, pops is now 75 and I didnt want to push him too much. By now, the buck should be comming off a hill if our plans were correct. As soon as we stopped, these 3 little pigs took off up another canyon. I told dad I was going to try to kill a pig and he should go after that buck comming off the hill.
Well it didnt take long for me to work up the draw and get across the ravine from these little guys. The grass was so tall, I could barely see movement as they walked side hill, but I could hear them comming and grunting. I stopped and got ready for the shot. The biggest one was second in line and I was waiting for it to get into a clear shot position. The shot was pretty far 30 to 35 yrds across the ravine, but when I let the string drop I knew right away it was right. The pig squelled, spun and ran over the ridge. I immediately went to the spot of the shot and found a huge spray of blood on the grass. It ran about 25 yrds or so, then tumbled down to the bottom another 30 yards or so. I followed the sign easily to him. The shot was perfect, through the back of the front shoulder low and tight and exiting behind the ribs (slight quartering too me). I drug him to the road and went to look for pops.
I found dad and he had gotten to within 60 yds or so of the buck, but it disappeared over the ridge. It was just great that we can spend time together doing this, I dont think it will be long before he cant go any more. We were both happy that our trip turned out the way it did and we enjoyed our day. Here is a pic, I know it is just a small pig approx 50-60lbs, but it will make a great batch of chili-verde.
For those who wish to know, I shoot a Legends Bow 53 lbs @30in (I shoot about 31in). I shoot Air Force GT arrows with 150gr scirocco heads with a total wt of approx 500gr.
