Looking for a quality Maine Outfitter
« on: September 27, 2010, 08:29:00 PM »
I just returned from my anual New Brunswick bear hunt with my wife and two sons. This year was the first time that I went the same week that the moose season came in. The outfitter, who in the past was great and highly recomended, left the bear hunters pretty much high and dry. I don't want to get into a bunch of details about our experience, but let me say I was VERY disappointed and will not be spending my hard earned money there again.
All that said I will be looking for an outfitter in Maine. I'm tired of the 1150 mile drive to Canada and the hassle at the boarder. Can anybody recommend a starting point for me?
THANK YOU
Glenn

Talk to Tony Boucher at Sqapan Mtn. Outfitters. He's a trad archer and a real stand-up guy.

Wade Kelly at Tyler Kelly Camps is another, again a trad archer so he knows what kind of shot we need and sets his stands accordingly.

Check out Oxbow Lodge...great guides and a great lodge!  My Dad and I are headed back in 2011.

Another very satisifed customer of Eldon's.  I can't imagine better service or harder work for his hunters.  I have been five times and look forward to a return again before long.  Wouldn't book with anybody else as long as he is in business. Eldon is a dyed in the wool longbow hunter and loves to have traditional hunters in to hunt. Check it out at  www.hunterspointguideservice.com

Check out Sunrise Ridge Guide Service in Bingham, ME.  Mike and Kathy are great hosts and he gets into the bear!!  We were up a few years ago to hunt deer.  If you look at the deer hunting pictures you will see the brute 10 pointer that my buddy shot.  Website is  www.sunriseridgeguide.com  . They are great people and his prices were good back then

Hunters Point Guide Service is a sponsor here. Click on the link under my avatar (my wife does the website) and you will get a really good feel for how good the hunt is. We even have a fellow who comes over from Switzerland every year. He hasn't gotten a bear yet but he loves the "communal" comraderie and the hard work Eldon and his guides put in to get you into a hot stand. Once you hunt at Eldon's it will be like a family reunion each season. It is very hard not to go back. Eldon, unlike many other guide services really welcomes traditional bowhunters and his bait sites are set up accordingly.

Thanks for the vote Pegen, but with the move to Virginia this summer, I won't be doing any bear camps for the next couple of years, just moose and deer, along with fly fishing and canoeing. I;m focusing on getting everything up and running down here for next season and hope to become a TG Sponsor if I can get some good leases.

That's why I gave the nod to Tony and Wade. Both are members of Maine Traditional Archers and not only run great camps, but are big supporters of the sport of traditional archery in general and MTA shoots and programs.

Thanks!

Thanks everybody for the responses, I really appreciate it. It's so hard trying to find someone to trust.Everybodies adds make them look like they got bears just rolling out of the barrels. Personal experience from others seems to work the best. My family has owned our automotive repair business for almost 70 years now with me owning it the last 15. A fellow asked me how much my advertisement budget was and when I told him it was nothing, he told me it was impossible and I'd be out of business in a few years. Well that was 13 years ago and I'm still complaining that I can't get away for a vacation when I want. Do good work, be honest, and treat EVERYONE like you want to be treated. And your business WILL flurish. Most people will be shocked. Sorry for the rant!
