Arrow Weight for Whitetails
« on: October 11, 2010, 01:49:00 PM »
Tell me what you think of my set-up.

Shooting a GN Ghost 51@28.  My draw is 26.5.  My arrows are 29 inch Gold Tip Traditionals with a 50 grain insert, 145 grain tip, an arrow wrap, gt nock,  and 3 5 inch feathers.  I was going to pick up some Magnus Stingers 150 grain.  Either 2 blade or 4 blade.  Should I beef up the front end with some 100 grain inserts.  My set up shoots and fly's great right now but have not shot broadheads yet.

I only shoot wood so I don't know those carbons; however if you are getting good flight go with your current set up.
If you increase the insert weight you may have to cut your shafts a little to allow for the extra weight. See how it works with the BHs before changing anything.
If you have any real doubts about your set up you could try bareshafting at 20 yds.

Your setup is very similar to mine except for the insert weight(see my specs in my signature below), I have 100 grain brass inserts. I believe you would be just fine with that arrow, especially since you're getting good arrow flight.

I think you`ll be fine for deer.If you still have concern the shoot the two blade and I know you`ll do good with that. Whitetails ain`t hard to shoot through unless they are under you and thats a bad shot anyway for low poundage or any poundage for that matter. Hard to get both lungs on a deer close and under you.RC

I agree with the two blade and you are golden with that setup.

Everything about your set-up is heavier than mine and I quite easily blew through and adult doe at 21 yards a few weeks ago.

Thanks guys.  Switching to traditional has made me feel like I have been born-again into archery.  I have not had this much fun since I began bowhunting 26 years ago.  I really had not planned on hunting with my recurve this year but my shooting has improved to the point that I think I am ready.  Orginally I was going to wait til spring and turkey season.  My effective range is inside of 15 yards but that is where I like em anyway.

Your good to go,put your arrow in the heart and lungs and you will have a dead deer.

You will do fine with that set up.  The option does exist to go heavier up front; you will probably have to take an inch of the shaft but it sounds like you have the room.  Also, I like the regular magnus two blades vice the stingers.  Its a personal preference but I can have them shaving hair in under a minute with the g5 sharpening stick and a good piece of leather.  They are very easy to maintain, resharpen, and are relatively inexprensive (about $26-29$ for 6)
