Getting tape residue off a bow????
« on: October 17, 2010, 12:05:00 PM »
Hi Guys,

I got a great garage sale deal yesterday on a vintage Bear Kodiak Magnum recurve, but there were various kinds of tape on it, mostly around the riser area.  I've removed most of it and the bow appears to be in excellent condition.  But I think the tape was put on in the 70's, and there is a lot of hard residue left behind.  On a lot of things, I'd break out the Goo-Gone for a job like this, but in this case I don't want to chance removing or hazing the original finish or glass.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Nevermind!  I almost always do a search for info first, but for some reason I didn't think about it until after I posted this time.  There is an old post that had the answers I was looking for:    http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=049109    Thanks anyway.

I took paint off a Bear Kodiak Hunter that I bought used with Goo Gone Extreme in the spray can.  Sprayed on a clean rag first then rubbed off the paint.  Worked great, and did not harm the finish of the bow at all.  CAUTION!  Use this stuff outside or in a garage with the door open, unless you like the chemical smell and the buzz you'll get from breathing this stuff.

A lot of good products have been recommended; but 30-40 year old tape residue can be about the toughest stuff to remove without harming the finish. Lower your expectations, go slow and take it easy with the chemicals.

Glue residue from tape is tough stuff to remove.
Trade name "Bestine", chemical name "Hexane", is
a thinner that should remove this residue, and not
harm the bows finish. (Unless the finish has a chip, or crack).
Wet a rag with the thinner and let it stay on the residue for several minutes. It will start to
soften, and then turn to goo, and maybe release,
or at least allow you to roll it off the bow.
