As I had predicted from as previous scouting trip, he slowly continued along the field edge and entered a game trail that connects to the ridge running east/west. I was hoping that was just the beginning of the deer movement for the evening. So as my anticipation was running high, I hear a cluck just a few yards behind me and left. As I strained my eyes in that direction I could see two turkeys headed past my hide at 4 yards!
Behind them I could see a few more birds and was not sure if it was the flock that I had seen 3 weeks earlier which had a white hen in the group, plus three nice long beards. But a bird in the hand is better than the rest in the field, right?
So as the first two where passing by me the first one gave me that, I don't know what that is look? But I don't think it's right! She turned and was slowly heading back towards the second bird. So as they turned to walk away from me I drew and picked a spot behind the leg of the second bird as it was quartering away from me at 8 yards. Without any thought the arrow was on it's way and disappeared through the bird right where I had been looking.
It's been going on the three years now since I put down my compound and switched to stickbow. My first season was uneventful, at least in the shooting department. Then last year I took a nice Tom during the spring, missed my first two shots at deer, but then connected on a doe. Then I was blessed with a 15 yard shot at a nice 5x5 elk in CO. that only went 80 yards before going down.
Now back to the turkeys. After the shot the bird jumped and hobbled off for about 10 yards, laid down and expired. I thought about Glenn and all his adventures that he shared with us in his book. I know that I will never have the chance to experience many of the hunts he went on, but I know that he would would approve of this hunt.
Here I am in my hunting attire!
I forgot my handy little camera adapter that clamps onto my arrow, so I had to wait until I got back to my house and have my wife take a pic.
Hopefully more to come as season progresses.
