Turkey hunt story
« on: May 26, 2007, 01:04:00 PM »
I had quite the experience today while turkey hunting. I found these birds last Sunday while driving around with Joe looking for some woodchuck hunting spots. There was a nice gobbler strutting out in a new alfalfa field. I went back their the next morning but heard nothing. This morning i had time to really hunt this spot. I arrived early this morning and stood on the edge of the woods but heard nothing again, i decided to go in anyway and try my luck. It was still fairly dark as i headed in about two hundred yards or so. There was scratching all over the place, that's always good to see. I set my gear down, just then some crows started in and he gobbled not seventy yards away, i was a little nervous about setting the blind up as i thought he might see me, but i went ahead and set up anyway. He continued to gobble, as i loaded my gear into the blind all was going good. After a little bit i tree called he responded right back. After some time i decided to give him a few soft yelps and clucks, he answered back i new he was real interested  so i set the call down and picked up my bow. I thought he was close enough so i would hear him fly down, i waited a good twenty minuets but hear nothing so i called again he gobbled back and was still in the tree. I then saw movement to my right no not turkeys but two coyotes. They came in nice and close maybe fifteen yards and were staring at my mounted hen, they sure did wind me because they took off like a streak, making all kinds of racket as they tore off. I figured it was all over but i stayed put anyhow, it was a good forty minuets before i saw movement. I looked and saw a jake running down the hill right at me, there were some small hemlock trees just off to my left he went right into them, he was inside twenty yards but i had no shot it was just to thick. Next thing i know here comes some hens but there out to about forty yards heading to the field that i first saw them in last week. All of a sudden there was all kinds of wings flapping and some putting, turns out that the long beard was beating the tar out of the jake right in front of me in the hemlocks, then the jack took off on a dead run to the field. As bad luck would have it the tom walked to the end of the hemlocks when he did that it put him out of bow range, he hung around strutting and drumming but ended up following the hens. I saw him once more but again out of range, he hung around and gobbled every once in awhile till 10:30 after he shut down i left. I found a good spot to setup for Sun. morning, i hope it turns out as interesting as today was, i was on pins and needles the whole time can't beat that. He has a skinny beard that is real crooked, so i named him crooked beard now lets see if i can get him before the season ends on Thur.

Sounds like an awesome morning. With the yotes aroun now you know why he won't come out of the tree until he can see perfectly.

Good luck tomorrow
