Need String for 1974 52"Bear K-Mag
« on: November 03, 2010, 03:14:00 PM »
I just picked up a good deal on a 52"Bear Kodiak Magnum 50# which I plan to use for bow fishing.

However I has no string. Any one kknow what length string I need? Will it is a AMO standard 52" AMO string. I assume B-50 is Ok with the K-Mag, Yes/No?

I have a K-Mag from the same era. It is a green future wood bow. I bought it off e-bay back is 2005. I bought a new string for it, I just looked at the tag that came with the string. It is 52 inches, 16 strand and it is a B-50. Do not put a fast flight on, it will ruin the tips.

Finkm1, does it say 52"AMO? I think that that means it is actually 3" shorter in actual length for a recurve? Do you have actual bow length

I know my longbow strings can vary by as much as an inch between styles/bowyers of the same bow length.

BTW, same color on mine.

Sorry for the delay. Yes it says 52 AMO. I would call 3 rivers or Kustom King and tell them you have a Kodiak Mag and they will fix you up with a string. I bought mine at a local archery shop. The pro shoots wheels but plays around with taditional bows.He had a catalog that he looked in for the string.

52" AMO string measures 49" under 100# of tension.  It will vary depending on how you like the brace, but probably a 48.5" string.

12-14 strands of B-55 is what I would use.

You will find that the 48# dacron string will initially brace up close to or over 9" on that KMag, but let it set for at least 10 minutes and then go shoot a couple dozen arrows..it will have streched and brace height will likely be closer to 8". A lot of KMag shooters advocate keeping the brace height around 8.5 " for best all-around performance.

I've adopted too many bows that needed a good home.

Bingo!  I have made quite a few of them for customers and they are always about 48".  One of the few recurves I have found that actually uses an AMO string, but just my findings.

Actually Daniel, 3" short of bow length is amo standard.
And that is measure under 100 lbs tension.

48"- 48.5 has always been good. Another reason to spin or twist your own!   :bigsmyl:
