Well let's start this out from the get go.
The last few days I have been hunting a hot buck spot in the morn and a hot doe spot in the evening. I been taking my Striker Slapstick in the morning and hunting out of a stand about 300 yards into the woods off a food plot on a hot trail that goes to a bedding area. The last several days I have been seeing several diiferent bucks and a whopper of a bruiser in and out of this area working scrapes but have yet to get a shot at the big boy.( only one buck tag here and I try to hold out as long as I can)
This morning was busy with 3 buck sightings and you guessed it, one was the big boy but no shot.
In the evenings I have been hunting a ground blind on a food plot that is heavily used and Have been taking my self bow with some flint tipped arras. Two days ago I shot over the back of a doe at about 15 yds and no dice.
Yesterday proved unfruitful and was windier than all get out on account of the front moving through. Now we get to the good part.
I was debating on sitting the buck stand this evening but was dreaming about fresh backstrap so I decided to go to the blind where the does have been showing up. After missing the doe a few days earlier with my selfbow which I will only take a shot out to 15 yds or so I decided I was gonna pack two bows to the woods and a quiver plum chock full of arras some with stone heads and some with abowyers.
About 5:00 pm two turkeys show up and I'm thinking "bummer turkey season just went out" and you know they where right in my lap. After watching them for about 45 min this nice little button buck shows up and I'm thinking "just let him get close enough and you can bust him with a rock". It is real windy again and everytime the wind gust all the milo I have my blind brushed in and the milo patch I'm sitting makes all kinds of racket and the button buck is real jittery and bouncing all over the place. After he runs off just when I think he's gonna give me that perfect shot angle he comes back, again and again.
This goes on for an hour and finally... You guessed it I shot over his back at less than 12 yds and he blows out like the winds. I'm sitting here thinking "Am I ever gonna connect with all primitive gear". After about 30 min I decide to get out of my blind and go find my flint tipped arra cause I got alot of time in building them dudes. After I found it I decide that there is still alot of shooting time left so maybe I should stick it out.
1 hour later I'm sitting in my blind having a cup of coffe and pretty well thinking to pack it in. Just as it's getting dark I notice a deer standing in the edge of the woods. I think "awsome" heres another chance. It was dark enough that I couldn't tell if had buttons or if it was a doe but light enough to shoot. I thought it was the same deer. He came to with in 10 yds of my blind and I was sure of it. As I started to draw on him with my selfbow the wind gust and this dude about done a back flip getting out of there but stopped just at the edge of the woods.
Normally my comfort zone with my striker is about 20 to 25 yds and I'm thinking "he's just about 25 if he turns broadside I'm taking a shot with my glass bow". After a staring match for about 20 minutes he finally turns and is perfectly broadside. I draw pick a spot just behind his armpit and let her fly. In an instant he starts to spin but it is to late, I see the arra disapear in his side and he bolts.
It's getting dark so after about 10 min I get out of the blind and go to where he was standing to mark the spot. When I walked up on the spot I see my arrow laying on the ground and pick it up and at first sight I see good blood then I notice stomach matter on the feathers. I think oh crap, but I know where I seen the arrow hit. I wait a few minutes and figure I better see if I can find blood. After following a not so great blood trail I hear something stumble in the woods and think I better back out so I go to the truck and call a buddy and an hour later we picked up the trail. We followed it about another 50 yds and he was laying there expired.
When I dressed him out I checked out the hit, it went in right at the spot I picked and exited between the last two ribs and clipped the gut. I only hit one lung but got a pretty good slice in the liver so I figure it's a good thing I backed out and gave him some time or he may not be hanging right now.
