Steel Master or Wheelie/Rada for Simmons
« on: December 02, 2010, 11:13:00 PM »
I have aquired several Simmons heads, both Treesharks and Landsharks and need to get an edge on them. I don't have a bench grinder so that kind of system is not an option. I have considered a chain saw file but I would need a jig of some type to keep the angle consistent.

I have a Rada wheel type sharpener and it does OK but I feel it is best suited to touch up sharpening in the field.

Has anyone used the Steel Master sharpener offered by Simmons, is it worth the $40?

Simmons users, how do you get your heads hunting sharp?

I have heard good things about the Steelmaster but after watching the info from Chris Spikes decided on his system for the Simmons heads.

I use a pull through sharpener to establish the edge. Once thats done a rounded surface to hone is easiest. I use a rounded board with a leather glued on that is charged with black buffing compound. A round file or sharpening stick would work to.

I use it and love it. It is easy to use and will sharpen any 2 blade head. The first time I saw it used I bought one. They are worth the money.LCH

I used a RADA with good success when I shot Simmons heads.

Just today I finally lined-up my last Duck on getting the Simmons heads scary sharp. I have the Steel Master I got used with no instructions. Last week I talked to Dave at Simmons about it when I ordered some Land Sharks. He sent a set of instruction with the heads, and told me the secret is "Light Pressure" with the ceramic rods. I got all three of the LandSharks shaving sharp in about a minute each out of the box. Just a dozen or so very light passes with those ceramic rods to take off the small burr is all it takes. The Steel Master is worth every penny. You can also use it to sharpen any 2 blade head, or knives.
