Help me make a decision!
« on: December 04, 2010, 05:57:00 PM »
My new longbow is pulling 53# at my draw. Im trying to decide on arrows and Im going to the Easton Gamegetters because of the price and I've heard they are pretty good arrows. Im putting around 265 grns up front with the insert and everything. Should I go with 2016 (500) at 10.6 GPI or go with 2117 (400) at 12 GPI?

Im getting some pretty heavy weights and am happy with that. I'll be huntin hogs and whitetails.

I all ways try and shoot the heaviest arrow I can as long as it flys true......test them a lot at all hunting yardages you will be shooting....tune to your bow and get whatever you decide flying like darts and you will make meat......

For the price Surewood shafts at 38.00 a dozen are an even better buy.

I would go with the 2117 with that much weight up front.

I pull exactly the same specs  but at 27" ... with 265 up front on a 2016 I think you would be way underspined . I use a 200 gn plus insert [220 gns all up and i pull an inch shorter at 27" so I would suggest you go up in spine or shoot less weight at the head. You can also just use the Glue-In, Glue-On Broadhead Adapters for a 2016 they weigh 22 gns and let me use bigger heavier b'heads with going overboard on weight .
Mind you my 2016's weigh about 536 gns and will blow through any Aussie hogs or deer I will shoot at .

A couple of other things to consider ...
are you drawing a true 28"
b-50 or low stretch string
Arrow flight ... this is the real key ... which flys best from you and your set up ... only you will be able to determine this.
But back to your original query ... with 265 up front on a longer than 28" 2016 ... you will be IMHO way underspined.

Years ago (late 60's early 70's) the 2117's were the go to shaft for anything in the 50# draw range. (I used em on a Super Kodiak) I still have some traditional 2117's.  They flew off my 55# TF Widow (I draw 28") like the prerverbal dart.  They are also damn near indestructible....

I shot em with Bear Razor Heads and nothing else.... Got both side penetration on deer virtually every time....  This was whe "pass throughs" were only for the "Big Boys".

Depending on your release they might show stiff...  Work on the release... Not the arrow.

Depend on how close to center you bow is cut.  Not cut to the 2016 are probably the best bet.

Thanks for all the help.. I'm using a flemish twist string from Bama bows and It looks like Im gonna be goin with the 2117's...I plan on using 125 grn Glue-on Woodsmans with a 125 grn Broadhead adapter and standard insert which I think are around 15 grns..so its around 265 grns. My total arrow weight will be: between 620-650 grns depending on how short or long I have to cut to get proper flight.

Seriously, if you can, spend the money and get some AD hammerheads. I shoot them with the a similar bow and point weight. They don't break and fly great. Mine are cut to 30".

I'm changing my mind again.

Anyways.. Im think this:

Easton Gamegetters 2016 (500) at roughly 29" with a total weight of 307.4 then when I add a 225 grn point it puts me at 532.4 grain.. As always add 10-15 grns for feathers and a nock (Im adding 12 grns)..  544.4 grns and 18.8 GPI.

Any input is welcome..Im really trying to do my homework before I buy any arrows.

STU Millers Dynamic Spine Calculator says:

Arrow Input: 2117 cut to 29.5" with a 225 grn tip 15 grn insert and 13 grns of knock weight and 5" feathers= 53.8

Bow Input: Longbow/Selfbow #53 at 28" and 28" draw cut 1/16 away from center(not past)= 53.4

Arrow Specs: 616 grns, 11.6 GPP, 17.8% FOC, 161.7 FPS, 35.7 ft-lbs

These are awfully close and I like the weight and everything...

I would definitely go with the 2016s. If they're too weak, you can always add material to the side plate to make them act stiffer. No problem.
