New 2011 KY Elk Info
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:18:00 PM »
Just perusing the KY F&W site and found this info and tag breakdown. Seems as if the gunners get the lion's share for 2011.

New for 2011 applicants can apply for two separate types of tags, i.e. an "antlered" and "antlerless" archery tag.

The breakdown for all the tags is below.

Tag Weapon # of tags

Antlered Archery or crossbow 80

Antlered Firearms 120

Antlerless Archery or crossbow 240

Antlerless Firearms 360

Total All 800

Do you know if you can use archery equipment with a gun tag?

I looked, but didn't see where it specifically said you could or could not. Maybe someone else will chime in with a definitive answer.

Just asked two local F&W wardens the other day, they dont have a clue, here in KY they change the rules, laws each year, sometimes in mid year. Our Commisioner over F&W is being sued right now, for several different reasons, as the commisioner and in a private suit, conflict of interest, leasing hunting land for his personal buisness, etc. Also some impropriety was mentioned about the elk tags, some people have been "drawn 3-4 times", out of 46, 000+ entries? Also guides guiding on public land, which is illegal and F&W wardens right there watching, nothing done.  Was in the Lexington Herald Leader , Sunday paper, a week ago Sunday. I would call the F&W ask them about this, only way to get a clear answer, maybe? My wife drew a bull tag last year, her brother this year, I have been putting in since day one with no luck, overall seems like a fair deal, but the gripe about some people getting drawn multiple times, is fact, I know this for certain.

I would be willing to bet that your draw odds are better with the Bow than the rifle. So even if you can hunt the rifle season, I think if you research you will find better odds with bow.

I'd say you're right. However, since you can apply for two tags now, if you were able to hunt with a bow during gun season, you could increase your odds of drawing a bull tag by applying for both archery and firearm tags.

Steve,

Can you use a deer tag to shoot an elk outside of the reintroduction area?

If so, would it be possible for a non-resident to buy, or draw (not sure how KY works) a deer tag, and then hunt the counties nearby to bag an elk?

Like someone previously stated the rules are changed often and it is my understanding that a deer tag cannot now be used to harvest an elk that is found outside the restoration zone. You must now have an elk permit of some sort even outside the zone.See the Ky. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources for the regs.

A big issue has been non-residents applying for a tag (wanting to come shoot a bull) then getting drawn for a cow tag and not showing up. That is one reason this time you will be able to choose.

Reading through the FAQ's...

Tags only valid through the season awarded and no using archery during gun.... Makes it easy to choose the two options though!!!

I've put in for the last 2-3 years and would love a chance at a cow. Why do people do that.

Hazzard is not outside the restoration zone, but smack dab inside it, where we stayed last year when my wife drew a bull tag. She shot her bull 40 miles back in the mountains from Hazard. You can buy a $30 tag for outside the restoration zone. There have been 3 killed in my county that made it that far, all cows, about 150 miles from the Zone.

Quilty as charged!

Beacuse the old system forced me into that situation.  3,500 miles is a loooog way to go to hunt cow elk.....
