Moose Hunting
« on: December 11, 2010, 01:15:00 PM »
Wow- so many shows thus week on TV Moose hunting. I envey all those who can do that. I live in a state that if you have more than luck with Deer you are doing good. A few bow hunted Bears every year killed. Nothing else for Big Game. Can't afford to go most anywhere else anymore with this economy. Tthose that live in States with several species to hunt count your blessings. What species do yoiu have for mutilple hunts each year?

Turkey, white-tail and if you are one of the lucky 800-1,000 the largest elk herd in the eastern United States -- Larger than Nevada's in fact.

I live in Ontario. We have small game, turkey, whitetail, blackbear and moose. They are talking of a very limited elk hunt for 2012. And I mean limited two gun and one archery tags.

I am also in Ontario but no turkeys up where I am.  We have lots of moose, bear, whitetail and of course small game.  I love it here, but I have never lived anywhere else.

I have Moose out my back door too. Roughly a 3 month either sex season OTC tags. Kind of fun hunting deer stands and having a moose show up. I'm not too picky with them yet as we prefer that venison to all except sheep and antelope.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

This will be year 26 in Maine draw. I've also put in for Vermont and New Hampshire since they started. By the time I get drawn the Moose will be walking and my bones will be left in the timber!!

Not sure how far away you are but the camp I hunt out of in Ontario has  a lot of American clientel Usually two cabins filled with ya'll. It's pretty resonable price wise, you would likely spend more on gas eh! This is a archery reserved area, yes they have a gun hunt but there are way more archery tags. Just dont come up third week, you would loose half the week to gun hunters scouting and sighting in cannons. Been there done that!

Bill: You should try the NH, Maine and Vt. moose lotteries. Plenty of moose in the more northern areas and easy for a DIY hunt. Odds for getting drawn aren't bad. My wife and I have each been drawn twice in the past 20 years here in NH.

Don't you also have an elk lottery in PA? I know there is one in KY...still not too far.

Well, I'm very fortunate to live in a state (Alaska) that allows a person to hunt multiple animals.  If a guy wanted to and could afford, you could shoot 2 grizzlies, 3 black bears, unlimited wolves, wolverines, 5 deer, 5 caribou, 1 elk, 1 goat, 1 dall sheep, 1 elk, and 1 moose.  There are more, but you would have to draw some special permits for musk ox and bison.
All these hunts are registration or over the counter permits. It sounds all great or to good to be true, but a person can take advantage of these privileges.  However, most of all these hunts are fly out (very expensive) or very difficult to get to.  Plus, a person needs to know where to go and how to do it.
I try to plan a couple hunts a year and focus on certain high priority species like goat and sheep.
Alaskans are very fortunate to have a large variety of exotic animals to chase.

Moose, none here. What a great majestic animal though. Had to go to Alaska for a hunt.
