Help---Fulfilling Promise to Chris
« on: December 17, 2010, 08:08:00 AM »
I need a little help in fulfilling a commitment I made to Chris this past fall.  He had asked me to make a knife for Larry.  As most know I don't sell my knives but my relation with Chris started several years back when he was deployed to Iraq.  Chris had posted on Trad Gang that his oldest son Christopher was starting to bowhunt and now his dad was off to war.  I thought with his dad gone that young Christopher needed a hunting knife to help in his bowhunting adventure...so I sent him a knife.  That was the start of my friendship with the Surtees Family.

Back to my promise:
I don't do any forging during hunting season so I was going to do the knife this spring.  Now I need to come up with something special for Larry.  Chris, Larry, and I have another bond with our tracking Dachshunds.  Chris loved is dog Koa.

What I need is to find a very nice piece of highly figured Koa wood.  I only need a few scraps for knife scales.  If anyone knows where I can purchase some, plese PM me.  Thanks...Doc

Doc,
Check with Jim Neaves at Centaur, I know he has done a couple risers with Koa. He just might have what you need laying around.

These are a few places that may be able to help. If you contact them they may have scraps. The first one sells 1 foot square pieces for musical instruments for about $100.00(smallest they have). But do a search for Koa on the Bay and you can get the scales around $10. Good luck.Tim

I am really getting tired of all the tears!

I just can't help myself when I see how everyone just steps up.

I'm certainly not a photographer.....and it shows......really hard to show all the curl in this set.......but it's there in spades.....on the other side as well.....even the side grain is curly.  I dampened them to try to make the figure pop out....to no avail.  You should be able to get a sense of the color though.

They are yours if you want them!

Chris had a Centaur made of koa, it was made from the same block that Jim made my bow from. I have some scraps.

Chris sold that bow to me, and it took me months to pay for it. He kept wanting to send me the bow, but I insisted that it get paid for first, as it would keep me motivated to keep sending money!

That is the bow that I donated to the Saint Jude auction the last time around. I would be proud to send you what I have, and hope that it will be enough to use.
OMG, now I have to   find them...       :scared:

Thank ya'll.  I appreciate everyones help.  Lin has been kind enough to cut me some scales that should work for what I want to try.  He even offered to help forge the blade.  Normally I'd jump at the chance to work with a master like Lin but I need to finish this knife as much for myself as for Larry...Doc

My first thought was god speed,

But no rush, eternity is long enough.

All good things, take time my friend.
