Trad Gang members who have passed ...

Ben Kleinig sent me a pm early today, suggesting a thought about remembering, honoring and paying homage to Trad Gang members who have passed on.  

Here's a portion of Ben's pm ...

... the internet is here to stay, and so, hopefully, is TradGang. What I'm getting at is this TradGang thing will hopefully last longer than us current TradGangers. We never know when tragedy might strike one of us too early, and God-willing we'll all get called to rest eventually in the future when we've reached our alottment of four-score-and-ten, give or take a bit.

Now, I consider myself to be a bit of a historian-in-my-own-lunchbox, I value history, and I think that there would be immense value in having a special part of TradGang dedicated to remembering those of us who have passed-away.

It could be something as simple as a traditional bowhunting biography written by friends or family, as well as a few photos. Remembering Fred Bear and Paul Schafer is cool, and we have a spot for them, but the everyday TradGangers themselves are a huge part of the history of traditional bowhunting in modern times.

I think it'd be really cool for generations of unborn traditional bowhunting youngsters to know who we are (were) and what we do (did)."

I passed this by Terry and he remembered what I had forgotten, that we talked about doing this sometime in the past, at the initial suggestion of a Trad Gang member.  Danged if either of us can remember just who that member is/was!

Anyhoo, we're gonna do this.  It'll be a fairly monumental archival project of sorts.  I just created a new category - "Happy Hunting Grounds" - and inside will be forums dedicated to members who are no longer earth-bound.

Terry and I need help.

Yep...must have been about 6 months ago, and this fine member said he would love to do the leg work if we'd put up the forum....and I don't know how it slipped by us but the forum never go put up.

Maybe Tradgang should bring back the Interviews. I enjoyed them , learned some thing about others will help for those that don't know one another.

You can send them out in Mass email to all the members to fill out and have a forum for all them to be put. Might even post 1 or 2 in the pow-wow  as a high light.

I suppose we'd need to make a list of folks who we've lost, and find somebody who knows them well-enough to put a biography together. From the Aussie end of things, although I never met the blokes, I'm sure I could get in contact with some bowhunters who knew Bill Baker and Pedro Lever pretty well. Some biographers would wish to write freestyle, whilst others may wish for some kind of pro forma. A pro forma might include details such as name and dates, equipment choices, personal qualities, background, career, traditional bowhunting anecdotes, and other interesting snippets. However, another way of tackling the task may be to simply open it up to forum members to write their memories or what they knew of the deceased member.

I would think that we'd want all forum members to be able to contribute, right?

I may have a very specific memory to share of someone, while not knowing another person, other than from the forum.

I think this would be an excellent idea for all those members that have passed! It would be a great honor to them.

On the subject of the member interviews someone mentioned............
I think most of that can be covered now, "IF" everyone just filled out their member profile. Matter of fact, if the admins wanted they could likely expand the member profiles to cover everything included in the member interviews....... but the admins likely don't see a benefit of expanding the profile questions due to the lack of members filling in the current data.

as it is, most members don't completely fill out any of the non-mandatory profile fields, so i don't see value in adding more.

i think the logical progression is to ...

1. identify what deceased members need to be recognised

2. gather their data (text and images)

3. gather any and all of their trad gang topics and posts

4. create their forum within the 'happy hunting grounds' category

i can take care of #4, but terry and i need member input assistance for #1, #2 & #3.

May I make another suggestion, as well, to Rob and Terry.

Terry, Rob and Curt do a great job of monitoring this site.

I try "very hard" to embrace this site as a Traditional Bow Hunting Site and stay on topic. I know, I fail often.

But at the same time, it is such a fantastic place to meet new people and make lasting friendships. Thus, non-bowhunting threads happen.

During this Holiday Season perhaps a Moderator started thread, centered around, "Christmas and New Year: Greetings, Well Wishes, Seasonal Messages" etc. could be put up.

That thread would be a common place for anyone wishing to share holiday greetings and good tidings of great joy.

Then, after the New Year, the thread would be stopped and taken down.

This might be a good way for TGr's to make the Season "Merry" without overwhelming the Pow Wow with non-bow hunting threads.
