Does anyone use just a simple tape on reel to bow fish. Been thinking of trying it but don't want to spend a lot at first.

That is what i generally use.  They work pretty good too.  I have shot a lot of gar and some mullet too with various bows and that type of reel set-up.  You can sometimes find them for $5 used.  Heck, I once bought an old fiberglass bow for $5 just to get the tape-on reel.

You will get addicted to bowfishing though.
