dehydrator question
« on: December 18, 2010, 07:42:00 PM »
I asked a question on the smoking, grilling, recipe page and got O responses so I hope I'm not breaking any rules here. Does any one have any experience with Cabela's dehydrators . Do you have to rotate the shelves?  thanks

I love 'em. I just finished making a marinade for this years deer today and have 3 pounds in the fridge soaking it all in. I slice thin and have not had to rotate shelves. The air is circulated pretty well. My two boys are drooling all over the house, I hope I get some.

depends on how thick you cut the meat... It should be done to a point where it brakes when being bent, but not brake apart.. just like the kind you get from the store.

If you are using a Jerky Gun and your dehydrator is set to 145 degress four pounds of jerky should take 4.5 to 5 hours (at least in my climate).

I have the 160 liter comm dehydrator wildwood, and as long as you dont crowd too much meat in it you won't have to rotate, but i put quite a bit in at a time and rotate top to bottom and turn front to back to speed up the process if i fill it up.
YOU HAVE TO STAND FOR SOMETHING OR YOU'LL FALL FOR ANYTHING !!!

Fischman,
I just bought one of the 80 liter commercial dehydrators yesterday.  Will see how it goes.

While mine is not Cabelas, just store bought from that guys that endorses just about everything, it does fine. It has six or so trays. I can normally fit a pound of deer burger and use the inch wide jerky shooter to fill all the trays. I use store bought cure mix also. I rotate the trays if Im home to do it that way. As well as flip individual pieces over on the trays too. Yep, Im anal but it works for me. Takes around eight or so hours till its done. Have tried the stix but not much so the jury is still out on that one. With family and friends its gone in in way less time.  Brad (who has to hide and eat his jerky if he wants any) Davis

Yep, I like to flip mine after the first 20 minutes or so otherwise it sticks real bad to the tray. 8 hrs at 145 and try to keep the kids from eating every bite.  :nono:

I have a homemade one and by the way I am just making some right now.It take about 6 to 8 hours to
make depending on size and thikness of the meat and
I do rotate my trays every 2 hours. When it is done
I have to hide the meat cause my two sons are treasure hunting for it!!

Thanks for all the replies it helped. I have a Garden master thats getting old. I dont have to rotate trays and drys 4 lbs. of meat in 3 to 4hours. the only problem is its plastic and the trays start to crack after a while, their more super glue than anything now
