2016 + 49 lbs Draw Weight = 225 gn tip?

Here is a very specific tuning question.

I shoot a Bob Lee Takedown Recurve and I pull right at 52 or 53#. I am shooting perfectly tuned Cedar Arrows, 60-65 with 160gn up front. I love the trajectory I get from that set-up, and a bare shaft will fly right into my fletched groups.

I recently "re-fell in love" with my Bob Lee Takedown Longbow - 49#. I have been shooting 2016 cut to 29.5" with 125 gn up front for quite a while. The total arrow weight comes in around 480 gns. This gives me a very comparable trajectory from my recurve to my longbow.

Here is the issue. I started tuning some 2-blade Magnus broadheads to my longbow for a hunt in Illinois in January, and they were planing real bad. I decided a bare-shaft session was in order now that i'm not going to be just shooting targets with this set-up.

I am coming up real stiff on these arrows. I put a 145 gn tip on, and still was very stiff. I want to get these arrows flying well, so I was contemplating buying 100 gn brass inserts, which will boosting my tip weight to 225.

Is this too much of a jump for this set-up for overall arrow weight (Now will be 580gn total weight) and spine reduction?

My daughters set up is a bow about that weight but 125 gr flys perfect bare shaft and then finished - 2016 at 29 inches.

But thank you! I think the draw lengths, and bow styles are what is seperating our arrow performance differences.

From a 50#, cut to almost center Buffalo Longbow:
I shoot a 2016, 30" long, with 200 grains up front, or a 500 spine carbon, same specs.
Both fly just right.

Do not think there is any specifics? just keep tinkering with weight and see what brings the arrows into complaince. Or maybe lengthen your arrows a bit.

You may lose trajecctory but if the arra is flyin sthraight it is gonna go through what it hits.

I'm shooting 29" 2016's with 125 gr. heads out of a 55# @ 28" recurve and they fly perfect. Bareshaft or fletched, doesn't matter. With that said, I can see this arrow/head combo being kinda stiff for a 49# draw, not hugely stiff, but alittle. I'd try it with the increased point weight and see what happens. Worst case it makes them to weak and you just remove some weight until it works. Best of luck!

Have you tried Stu's calculator.  I was going to plug your numbers in for you but needed a few inputs.

If I make a few assumptions with the calculator such as you are pulling that bow to 28" and it has a FastFlight string (I know they can handle those) and the riser is cut to center(including whatever buildup you may have), then the calculator says the bow needs 57.7# of dynamic spine.  Of course, if the thing isn't cut to center or you built the rest up, or you don't really pull 28", then this doesn't mean anything.

When I do your arrow on the calculator:
(1) if you are shooting with 5" feathers and no wrap, then with a 100 gr insert you only get a dynamic spine of 42.5#, which would be too light

2) assume same feathers and no wrap, then the calculator shows that arrow at 58.5#, which is very close to what it says the bow requires

For comparison, I shoot a 48# Leon Stewart longbow, but only pull to 27".  The calculator shows that for me that bow needs 53.5# of dynamic spine.  I shoot a 29 1/4" 2016 arrow with (3) 5" feathers and no wrap with a 125gr point just fine out of that bow.  The calculator says the spine of that arrow is 57.6#, which should be a little stiff.

I used to shoot a Bob Lee Stick 50#. I draw 28.5", I used a 2018 cut to 30" with a 125 gr. point. It bare shafted weak but flew perfect with fletching. I even shot it through paper and would get a bullet hole.

What is the length of your longbow? It is easily possible your long bow likes the heavier set up.

I shoot both recurve and longbow Bob Lee TDs. Though the weight of my bows is a few pounds lower than yours (45#), they shoot 2016s, cut to 29", 125g BH, 100g brass insert, like bullets. So, no. I don't think 225 up front is a problem. Whether it solves your planing problem may be another question. Changing the orientation of the blades (either vertical or horizontal)may help. If not, go to Woodsman BHs.
