Does goretex work like a wind block?
« on: December 24, 2010, 02:46:00 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I've read with enthusiasm the post lately about fleece and wool garment with windshear.
I'm not trying to rehash these posts, but it seems the general consensus is that when cold windshear is louder than no-windshear.

So, what are the quieter alternatives?

I've never had a goretex coat. I wonder if it cuts the wind?
Also, The goretex gloves and boots I've owned always have the goretex closer to the skin than the outside.
Is the windshear layer close to the skin or on the outside of the insulation?

Seems to me that you would want a wind cutting layer close to your body. Otherwise the wind will just keep robbing the warmer air your insulating layers have trapped.

What about Gore Windstopper?
Thank you
MERRY CHRISTMAS

I never had any windsheer clothing but I have many gortex clothes , gortex is for warmth and I feel it does stop wind, it depends on how it is integrated into the fabric. If its an outer shell of gortex it will most likely be loud.A cheap golf wind breaker pull over under a good outer coat will do well for a windblocker.

I have used GoreTex rain gear for years, yes it helps stop the wind.

Yes indeed, then take it to the next level WindBlocker under Goretex.

I've used fleece with the older "Comfort Max" and it doesn't breath a lick but is totally silent.

I'm "told" by sales guys that Gore Windstopper is simple gortex without the sealed water proof seams... same membrane... If it lets some moisture out (mine didn't do enough to count on Gortex products to amount to much help venting sweat in rain gear) then it will let in a % of wind...has to!

Ditto to what Doc Nock said. Windstopper is "gore tex" without the warranty and taped seams etc. Personally I'll never own a another piece of bowhunting gear without windstop! Lots or tons of threads about the greatness of wool lately but then there's lots or tons of threads that you can't elimate your odor just hunt the wind and hope! Oh well maybe someday those folks will learn there are better outter wear out than wool! Now wool has it's place, but not as a windstop or for scent control.

I can't understand why they put a wind blocker on the inside of a wool or fleece garment, If the wool and the fleece are holding in the warmth then every time the wind blows it takes away the heat that built up but stops the wind ? At least that is how I understand it to work.

Gore-tex does not breath very well, that is if you get sweated up it's gonna take awhile to get rid of it, and something else I have recently found out is if it gets a little to close to the camp fire it's ruined even in boots.

As far as wool and scent goes, wool doesn't seem to hold an odor, in other words I think it gets rid of whatever odor it picked up just by hanging it outside for awhile. I do find that it keeps me very warm with just a light fleece undergarment next to the skin.

I also use an odor killing spray which seems to work very well.

Absolutely, Take your favorite wool garment, hold it close to your mouth and blow on it with your hand underneath! If you can feel your breath, which you can most of the time, now realize your heat is gone plus your scent is blown with it!

njloco, your seeing thru the smoke and mirrors of the "traditional" thinking that ALL the old ways are still the best. Yes wool is incredible stuff, makes incredible clothes, definately has it'place, BUT!

Now njloco you just busted the bubble of all the dyed in the wool guys!Sad but true there is tons of better gear out there than wool or fleece EVEN with windstop! Now I expect tons of folks saying how windproof their wool is but proof to the wall hold a single layer of it up to your hand and blow on it! IF you can feel your breath it ain't windproof! Wool has it's place it just aint for being windproof or scent proof! Yeah I know they'll be tons of folks saying you can't be scent proof but then 90% of those folks will be wearing wool or fleece without WP lineing! Oh well I love those guys as I sneak in scent proof behind them!

I have a new method that I like ,if I may share.Go down to your local thrift shops and watch for a good quality golfers wind shirt. If its super nasty out,put it on under you camoshirt or wool sweater and the wind wont cut you,you can still move and works pretty good.Ive tested this method recently and it s quietand super wind proof. Those golfer windshirts have the same stuff as windshear in them and are designed for golfers ,so they can still swing.Just a thought.I have an extra one that I will send you for free,if a large will fit you.Let me know.

No disrespect chanumpa but if your wind break is UNDER your wool then your wool can only provide insulation IF the wind isn't blowing, even in a breeze you loosing heat and scent.

The reason for using Goretex, is primarily because there is more moisture, or rain than most garments can handle, including wool. It doesn't take much energy in mild temperatures to make them uncomfortable. Goretex rain clothing is pretty noisey stuff, and a nylon jacket is just as noisey, IMO.

Goretex and windblocker are trade names for products that are used inside other fabrics; they would not last as a stand alone garment.

Almost any tight woven fabric, is a good wind blocker in conjuction with proper layering underneath for warmth, and something over it to reduce noise.

In my opinion the only critter that gets tricked by scent blocker clothing is the critter that paid extra for it. There aint a stink that stunk that a deer can't smell. As far as wind blockers go, I haven't found them necessary with my wool. Good layering has kept me warm in all but the most bitter cold and high winds even without a "wind block" layer. And if it's that windy, I'll find someplace out of it to hunt. Most likely where the deer will be too! I don't care for gore-Tex, dry plus etc unless I'm skiing or something. I find it doesn't breath as advertised if you are at all active.  You don't have to stop all of the wind to stay warm. Guard hair and wooly underfur keeps all the critters that spend a lot more time out there than we do. Figure that'll work for me.

I just bought a rag wool hat with a Gortex liner. It is the warmest thing I've ever worn. No wind gets through at all. Amazing what one little sheet of fabric can do. Kinda like Tyvek on a house.
